Ellen DeGeneres took to social media on Saturday to honor her wife Portia de Rossi on her 53rd birthday. This comes as the two of them are reportedly preparing to return to America. They fled the country last year and moved to England. They allegedly did this because of Donald Trump’s second presidential victory.
DeGeneres Honors de Rossi
DeGeneres, 68, took to Instagram on January 31 to pay tribute to de Rossi on her 53rd birthday.
“Happy birthday to my favorite person in the world,” DeGeneres wrote alongside a photo of de Rossi holding a dog in a garden.
de Rossi is an actress best known for her work on the comedy television series Arrested Development. She is originally from Australia, and she’s been married to DeGeneres since 2008.
DeGeneres celebrated her own 68th birthday last week on Monday, January 26. To mark this occasion, DeGeneres took to Instagram to post a photo of herself hugging de Rossi from behind. de Rossi can be seen in the image eating a chocolate chip cookie as DeGeneres embraces her.
“It’s a tough day to feel like celebrating a birthday,” DeGeneres wrote in the caption. “I’m holding space for what’s happening in our world and holding close what I’m grateful for. Like my wife. And cookies.”
This was seemingly a reference to what’s happening in Minnesota. DeGeneres has been outspoken about condemning the violence that has happened in Minneapolis as of late.
DeGeneres Speaks Out On Minnesota
“Hey everybody, I just wanted to say, I am so sorry for what is happening in Minneapolis and our country, really,” DeGeneres began in an Instagram video last month. “But specifically Minneapolis right now because that’s where I shot my last stand-up special and everybody there couldn’t have been more lovely.”
This was a reference to DeGeneres’ 2024 Netflix special, Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval.
“I shot it there because they say it’s the happiest city in America. And I found that to be true,” the comedian continued. “So my thoughts and my prayers are going out to everyone, and I’m proud of everyone who’s protesting peacefully, and I am sorry for anyone who has been hurt just for protesting, for doing what you should be doing.”
“Anyway, I am just sending love,” DeGeneres concluded.

DeGeneres Flees America
DeGeneres and de Rossi fled America in November of 2024 after Trump won his second presidential election.
“We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in,’” DeGeneres said at a July event in England. “And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.’”
However, all it took was one cold British winter to send DeGeneres and de Rossi crawling back to Southern California.
Back in December, an insider claimed that “the day-to-day reality of life in the rainy countryside has gotten increasingly boring and frustrating for both of them.”
“Portia’s restless,” the insider explained. “The weather doesn’t agree with her and she’s got very little to do except take long walks in the freezing cold or sit around the house while Ellen’s locked in Zoom calls or brainstorming strategy for her eventual comeback attempt.”
Making matters even worse, very few of DeGeneres and de Rossi’s famous friends from Hollywood have come across the pond to visit them. This has left them feeling more irrelevant than ever.
“Both of them are in agreement that it’s time to head back,” the source concluded.
Last month, we reported that DeGeneres and de Rossi purchased a home in Montecito, California for $27.4 million. This indicated to many that their permanent return to America might be in the process of happening at this very moment.
Like many liberal elites, DeGeneres and de Rossi seem to love to bash America while also trying to enjoy all of the freedoms this great country has to offer. As they each celebrate their birthdays, here’s hoping that they’ll have a little more appreciation for America if and when they return to the states.
