Back in February, we reported that CBS had officially green-lit a spinoff of the hit show Blue Bloods. It is set to be called Boston Blue. Donnie Wahlberg, who played Danny Reagan on Blue Bloods, is speaking out to reveal all about this new spinoff series.

Wahlberg Sounds Off

Wahlberg, 55, told Fox News that he “fought so hard” to save the show from cancelation. The rest of the cast joined him in trying to rescue the show as well. Now that the beloved CBS drama is officially over, however, Wahlberg wants fans to know that it will live on through his new show Boston Blue.

“When it ended, we thought, ‘Okay, some of the network’s gonna come and say, let’s keep going,'” Wahlberg said of Blue Bloods. “And nobody came, and it was kind of like we were all in denial about it.”

Once Blue Bloods ended, Wahlberg was shocked when he was presented with the chance to both star in and produce Boston Blue.

“It was heavy, you know?” he said. “It’s, like, how do I do this? Like, how does [his character] Danny Reagan carry on? You know, how do we create this new world for this character and how do we do it in another city, not in New York?”

Will Other Blue Bloods Stars Return For Boston Blue?

Blue Bloods ran on CBS from 2010 until December of 2024. It followed the fictional Reagan family, chronicling their involvement  in the New York Police Department. Wahlberg declined to reveal which specific Blue Bloods stars will be appearing in the spinoff. However, he made a point of saying that a Reagan is always just a “phone call away.”

“It was definitely a challenge to take on this opportunity,” Wahlberg admitted. “But I kept saying to myself, you know, if I’m really sincere about wanting ‘Blue Bloods’ to carry on, here’s an opportunity to do it.”

“Now, it’s just Danny going to this new world, but I can’t say a lot about it. But I could say, if he’s a Reagan, it will never be just Danny,” he continued. “There’ll always be a Reagan a phone call away. And the traditions that the Reagans have, Danny wouldn’t abandon those traditions.”

Wahlberg Is ‘Loyal’ To Tom Selleck

Earlier this year, a CBS insider claimed that Wahlberg is extremely “loyal” to his former Blue Bloods co-star Tom Selleck, 80. It remains to be seen if Selleck will have a role in Boston Blue. He previously played the fictional NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods for fourteen years.

“Over the decade they worked together they formed a very tight bond, they were a family,” this source told Closer Weekly. “That doesn’t just go away because the show is cancelled.”

“Tom still speaks to Donnie several times a week and the same with Bridget,” the insider continued, referring to the Blue Bloods star Bridget Moynahan. “They both respect him so much and love getting his advice on things and they’re also very protective of him, they worry.”

We can’t help but think that Blue Bloods never should have been cancelled in the first place. In the end, wecan’t wait to watch Boston Blue when it debuts in the fall!
