The country music legend Dolly Parton is turning 80 on Monday, January 19. To mark the occasion, the Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has proudly declared this to be Dolly Parton Day in the Volunteer State.
Dolly Parton Day
“Dolly Parton’s life and career is woven into Tennessee’s music, culture, and rich history,” Lee said in a statement. “Her talent and generosity have made a lasting impact on the world. And it is fitting that we honor her 80th birthday by celebrating her remarkable legacy and dedication to the Volunteer State.”
Lee signed a proclamation on Friday so that he could “honor the life, legacy, and extraordinary contributions of Tennessee’s favorite daughter.”
Parton was born on January 19, 1946 in Sevier County, which is located in rural Tennessee. She is known as the queen of country music. Parton is also known for her acts of service and philanthropy. Indeed, she has long promoted literacy and supporting children’s education.
Parton gives back through her Dollywood Foundation and the Imagination Library. The latter provides hundreds of millions of free books to children around the world to promote literacy.
“The proclamation recognizes Parton’s lifetime of achievement, service, and positive influence. And encourages all Tennesseans to join in celebrating her enduring contributions,” the press release said. “Dolly Parton has become a global icon whose career as a singer, songwriter, musician, actress, producer, and entrepreneur reflects the heart and spirit of Tennessee.”
Parton’s Love For Tennessee
This comes after Parton teamed up with Lee to narrate a short film about Tennessee’s role in our American history. The short movie is called Tennessee: The Original Frontier, and Parton was happy to honor her state by narrating it.
“Parton’s narration underscores the pride, resilience, and optimism that have long defined the spirit of the Volunteer State,” a press release on the film said.
“This short film honors the generations of Tennesseans whose contributions shaped America. And invites people across our state and nation to reflect on our rich heritage that defines us,” Lee stated. He added that he was grateful to Parton for narrating the movie.
Grand Ole Opry Honors Parton
Meanwhile, on Saturday night, the Grand Ole Opry is celebrating Parton’s birthday with their Opry Goes Dolly event. Sadly, Parton revealed earlier this month that she would not be able to attend due to some health problems she’s facing.
“Well hey there Grand Ole Opry family,” Parton wrote on Instagram on January 7. “I just wanted to say how much it means to me that you’re all coming together again this year to celebrate my big ol’ birthday with some of my songs.”
“Some of my favorite memories happened right here on stage at the Grand Ole Opry, and I wish I could be there in person but I’ll be sending you all my love, for sure,” she continued.
Parton ended her message by urging her friends and fans to “have the best night ever.”
Parton is a true living legend, and there will never be another like her. There’s no place she loves more than Tennessee. That’s why she has to be touched that the state is honoring her with Dolly Parton Day.
Please join us in saying a prayer for Parton’s health as she heads into her 80th birthday. God bless you, Dolly Parton!
