The country music legend Dolly Parton has been one of the most beloved women in the world for decades. That’s why it came as a surprise in a recent interview when Parton revealed that she still doesn’t see herself as famous.
Parton Doesn’t See Herself As ‘A Star’
“I think I’m a star to everybody but me,” Parton, who turned 79 yesterday, told Southern Living. “I always wanted to be famous, but nobody could have thought of the extent it became. I’ll see a whole wall of my pictures somewhere, and I’ll wonder ‘How did that happen?’ It’s more a joy than a surprise.”
Parton can be humble all that she wants to, but there’s no denying that she is a star! Indeed, she’s been nominated for two Academy Awards and won 10 Grammy Awards out of her 55 nominations. She also has her own Dollywood theme park.
She’s an American original – and you’d be hardpressed to find anyone who had a bad word to say about her.
Despite nearing 80, Parton is still as busy as ever these days. She’s currently searching for the perfect person to play her in her new Broadway show Dolly: An Original Musical. Find out more about that in the video below.
Parton Still Loves Writing Music
Even after so many years in the music world, Parton is still as passionate about songwriting as she ever was.
“I walk around with a song in my head and in my heart,” she said. The Jolene singer added that sometimes she gets so caught up in this that she loses her train of thought completely.
“I’ll go into a closet and wonder, ‘Now, what in the hell did I come in here for?’ ” she admitted. “There’s nothing that makes me happier than writing a song.”
This comes one month after Parton questioned whether or not people still see her as a country music artist.
“I do so many things, sometimes I wonder if I’m still considered a country artist,” Parton confessed. “Although I’m a country girl… I’ve had the chance to do things like my rock album… movies… I wasn’t sure.”

Parton Talks Dollywood
While Parton is still best known for her country music roots, she certainly does many things outside of that world. One of those things is her theme park Dollywood, which she launched in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee back in 1986.
“I was dreaming of a place called Dollywood for a long, long time,” Parton told TODAY earlier this month. “I’m just so proud that after 40 years that it’s just been great for family. I’m proud of every bit of it — I love the shows, I love the food, and of course, we love the resorts now that we have.”
Parton even has her own favorite treat from Dollywood that she still enjoys to this day.
“The funnel cakes we’re famous for, so I never go there … even if I’m in my bus or if I’m in my suite, The Dolly Suite, I say, ‘Run and get me some funnel cakes. I can’t leave here without funnel cakes,’” she gushed. “I have to say, we have some of the best foods ever at Dollywood.”
