Yesterday, we reported that the Oscar-winning Hollywood star Diane Keaton had died at the age of 79. Now, sad details are emerging about her final months.
Keaton’s Health Decline
Insiders are revealing that Keaton’s health took a drastic turn for the worse in the last months of her life.
“She declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her,” a friend of Keaton’s told People Magazine. “It was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit.”
“In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private,”‘ the source continued. “Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening.”
Back in March, Keaton made a major change to her life when she put her beloved “dream home” on the market. This came as a shock to those close to Keaton, as she had always planned to live in this home permanently.
Indeed, Keaton had moved into the lavish five-bedroom, seven-bathroom property back in 2017. She then embarked on a massive renovation on the home that took eight years, only finishing it earlier in 2025. Keaton listed the home in March for $29 million.
Keaton ‘Was Very, Very Special’
Neighbors had started to worry about Keaton in her final months. Though she was often seen walking her dog in her Brentwood, California neighborhood, she ceased to be seen outside over the past few months.
“She lived in Brentwood for many years,” another source explained. “She loved her neighborhood. Up until just a few months ago, she’d walk her dog every day. She was usually dressed the same, with a hat and her signature sunglasses regardless of the weather.”
“She was always very nice, funny and chatty,” this insider concluded. “She’d talk to her dog like he was a person. She was eccentric and had this old-school Hollywood aura. She was very, very special.”
The Grammy and Oscar-winning songwriter Carole Bayer Sager has also spoken out to talk about her final time seeing Keaton just a few weeks ago. Sager admitted that she was shocked by the former Annie Hall star’s appearance.
“I saw her two or three weeks ago, and she was very thin,” Sager told People. “She had lost so much weight.”
Sager went on to reveal that Keaton had been spending most of this year in Palm Springs to escape the wildfires that ravaged California back in January.
“[Keaton] had to go to Palm Springs because her house had been damaged inside, and they had to clean everything,” Sager stated. “She was down there for a while, and when she came back, I was kind of stunned by how much weight she’d lost.”
“She was a magic light for everyone,” she added. “I just loved her. She was so special, she just lit up a room with her energy. She was happy and upbeat and taking photographs of everything she saw, she was completely creative; she never stopped creating.”
Keaton Maintained Her Sense Of Humor
A film executive friend of Keaton’s expressed similar sentiments about the late actress.
“She was funny right up until the end,” this friend said. “She lived exactly how she wanted to, which was on her own terms, surrounded by the people and things she really loved.”
“In these last few years, she kept a close circle and she liked it that way,” the friend concluded. “She was funny right up until the end and she had this way of making even ordinary moments feel special. That was just who she was.”
At the time of this writing, no cause of death for Keaton has been made public. She is survived by two children, who have asked for privacy at this time.
Rest in peace, Diane Keaton.
