The country music star Carrie Underwood has long been one of the only openly devout Christians in the entertainment world. On Monday night’s episode of American Idol, she opened up about just how difficult it is to bring faith to Hollywood.
Underwood Discusses Bringing Faith To Hollywood
During last night’s American Idol episode, contestants Rylee and Breanna went head-to-head during a performance of Brandon Lake’s “Gratitude.” Indeed, this is a song that is dedicated to worshipping God. That’s why it immediately struck a cord with Underwood.
“I know how difficult it is to come into the entertainment industry and bring your faith with you,” Underwood said as she began to get emotional. “It is a brave thing to do because there are a lot of outside forces that are going to tell you not to do that.”

Underwood’s Religious History
Underwood was raised in a conservative Christian home in Oklahoma. She previously told People Magazine that “there was a lot about church that was really scary to a child who can’t understand it all.”
“We want to go to church, not just for lessons and learning, but also to have a community and be surrounded by people who are just trying to raise their kids up good,” she continued. “Keeping everything as loving as possible, you know?”
Back in 2012, Underwood revealed just how big of a role God plays in her daily life.
“Above all, God wanted us to love others. It’s not about setting rules, or [saying] ‘Everyone has to be like me’. No. We’re all different,” she told The Independent at the time. “That’s what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other. It’s not up to me to judge anybody.”

Underwood Returns To American Idol
Underwood became a household name when she won season four of American Idol back in 2005. Her career has now come full circle, as she is a judge on American Idol this season.
“This is a full-circle moment both for the show and audiences at home who have been tuning in for over two decades. Welcome home, Carrie,” Craig Erwich, president of Disney Television Group, told US Weekly after it was announced that Underwood would be a judge on American Idol this year.
Underwood was quick to gush over American Idol, admitting that the show “changed my life.”
“Now, I have the privilege of helping a new generation of artists change theirs,” she added.
Despite decades of success as a country music star, Underwood knows that she can’t please everyone.
“The role-model word is really scary to me, because no matter what happens in your life, something you do, wear, say, sing, whatever — somebody somewhere is probably not going to like it too well,” she previously said. “I just really try hard to do what I do and try to be nice to people and make great music, and if people think they can look up to that, that’s wonderful. If not, that’s OK, too.”
We can only applaud Underwood for continuing to use her platform to spread the word of God. If only we had more celebrities like her in the world!
