Carol Burnett has been hit with devastating news at 92 years of age. Sadly, her Apple series Palm Royale has been canceled after two seasons.
Palm Royale Cancelled
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Palm Royale will not be returning for a third season. Along with Burnett, the show starred Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern, Allison Janney, Ricky Martin, Josh Lucas, Leslie Bibb, Amber Chardae Robinson, Mindy Cohn, Julia Duffy and Kaia Gerber.
In the series, Wiig played an “ambitious woman” who “schemes to secure her seat at America’s most exclusive table: Palm Beach high society, circa 1969,” according to Palm Royale’s official IMDB synopsis.
The first season of Palm Royale earned 11 Emmy Award nominations. For the second season, Wiig was nominated for both an Actor Award and GLAAD Media Award.
Burnett Sounds Off
Burnett has long been open about how much she loved working on Palm Royale. That being said, she appears to have been prepared for the show’s cancellation. Indeed, back in January, Burnett admitted that she “doesn’t know” whether the show would continue after season two.
“It seems like a lot of the stories were wrapped up in this final season,” Burnett told The New York Post. “They’d have to, I think, create new characters, because a lot of the people who are in it are doing other things now.”
Burnett went on to confess that she wasn’t sure her character would be returning if there was a third season.
“It would depend, because I have other projects that I’m interested in behind the scenes,” Burnett explained. “So it kind of depends.”
“But I do love Abe Sylvia, who created it,” the former The Carol Burnett Show star added. “He’s a delight to work with.”
Palm Royale Creator Speaks Out
Sylvia made it clear at the time that he was hoping for a third season.
“I was so excited to be able to come back to these characters,” he said. “Now that I know all of the actors personally, these are all the places that I know they can go as artists, and I wanted to make sure with everybody that we went there.”
Sylvia then praised Burnett for the talent that she brought to Palm Royale.
“I would cast Carol Burnett as anything, honestly,” he gushed. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anybody get a laugh with just a little twitch of the face, lying still. But she did.”
“Stealing scenes that she was literally sleeping through,” Sylvia continued. “That’s what a master she is.”
Burnett chimed back in to say that choosing to take part in Palm Royale was an easy decision for her.
“I remember when they asked me to do it about two years ago,” Burnett said. “[Sylvia] called me and said we’d love you to be one of the characters.”
“I said, ‘Who’s in it?’ And they said, Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern, Allison Janney,” she concluded. “I said, ‘Don’t go any further. I’ll be on. I don’t care what you want me to do. I want to work with those people.’”
While it’s sad that Palm Royale won’t be returning, it appears that Burnett is taking the cancellation in stride. We can’t wait to see what other projects she has in the works.
God bless you, Carol Burnett!
