Legendary comedian Carol Burnett suggested modern-day comedy, with its reliance on foul language and raunchy antics, is “boring” to her.
She doesn’t like the “blue” stuff!
The 91-year-old comic, known for her groundbreaking work in comedy and television, made the comments on the “Variety’s Awards Circuit” podcast.
Burnett is most famous for her own long-running variety show, The Carol Burnett Show, which aired from 1967 to 1978 and highlighted the best comedy talent of the day.
The show came to prominence during what is considered a golden era of television when programs like The Mary Tyler Moore Show and All in the Family reigned supreme.
The modern-day shows just don’t measure up, Burnett suggests.

Carol Burnett Takes Dig At Modern Comedy
Burnett notes that shows in the ’70s thrived due to unique characters and their development.
“They are funny and character-driven, they’re not scatological or blue,” she said.
‘Blue’ comedy typically contains profanity and/or sexual imagery.
“I’m not a prude, but sometimes I think some of the stuff today… it’s been kind of easy to get a laugh by being a little blue,” she said. “I don’t mind if it’s within the character, but if they do it just to say a bad word, I think it’s boring, and it’s not funny.”
“Funny is ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show.’ Funny is Mary, Bob Newhart, ‘All in the Family’ – and they hold up today.”
Readers of The Mix most certainly agree!

Is Modern Comedy Boring And Unfunny?
It’s hard to argue with that take. Modern comedians and/or sitcoms rely heavily on edgy language and sexual jokes or innuendo.
Clean comics like Nate Bargatze are rare but appreciated. And more clever.
Throw in the fact that modern shows almost always force in characters from demographics that make no sense to the plot or storyline, and Carol Burnett is right… Boring.
Burnett is still active in the entertainment industry. She recently received her 23rd Primetime Emmy nomination for her role in Palm Royale.
It was a historic nomination too, as Burnett became the oldest female comedy acting Emmy nominee ever at age 91.
The Carol Burnett Show was a critical and commercial success, running for 11 seasons and earning numerous awards, including multiple Emmys.
Burnett is known for her exceptional comedic talent and her ability to perform a wide range of characters and sketches. She has been a true trailblazer, paving the way for future generations of female comedians.
In addition to her work on television, Burnett has also appeared in numerous films and stage productions. She has received several honors for her contributions to comedy and entertainment, including the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
