The Hollywood star Candice Bergen is in mourning after her beloved husband Marshall Rose died on Saturday following a battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 88 years-old.

Rose Passes Away

Rose’s obituary states that he was thankfully surrounded by loved ones at the time of his passing.

The end came after “many years of extraordinary strength and resilience” that he showed amidst his fight against Parkinson’s. His obituary went on to describe Rose as someone who “consistently modeled a life worth emulating.”

“A dedicated father and grandfather, Marshall had high expectations for those around him,” the eulogy added. “As a doting dogfather to his beloved goldendoodle Jerry, he instilled similarly high expectations. His family carries on his legacy of fierce compassion, stubborn persistence, and commitment to cheering on the Knicks. His wisdom, strength, and generosity of spirit will be remembered by the countless people whose lives he touched.”

Born in Brooklyn in 1937, Rose “spent his life in New York.” He earned an economics degree at City College and a law degree from New York University. Rose definitely put this stamp on the Big Apple as he oversaw the development of Frank Gehry’s IAC building, the renovation of Madison Square Garden, and three city charter schools.

“Marshall’s proudest contribution was his 30-year tenure on the board of the New York Public Library,” his obituary explained. “In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate a donation to the New York Public Library, an institution he loved so dearly. Any gifts given in his honor (nypl.org/memorial) will be earmarked for adult literacy programs at branches across the five boroughs.”

Bergen’s Devotion To Rose

Meanwhile, a representative for Bergen, 78, confirmed Rose’s death to People Magazine. The rep made note of the fact that Bergen and Rose were preparing to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary later this year, as they had married in June of 2000.

This was Bergen’s second marriage. The former Murphy Brown star was previously married to the director Louis Malle from 1980 until he died of cancer in 1995 at the age of 63. Devastated by Malle’s death, Bergen avoided dating altogether for three years after his passing. Indeed, she only met Rose thanks to 60 Minutes producer Don Hewitt and his wife Marilyn Berger playing Cupid.

“Marshall was in on it,” Bergen told CBS News in 2015. “Don and Marilyn invited me to their apartment for dinner, and then about two days before, Don called and said, ‘Oh, a man’s going to pick you up. His name is Marshall Rose.’ I said, ‘Okay.’ And I just saw Marshall and thought, Hmm.”

Bergen had been expecting someone “short and round.” Instead, she found Rose to be “a very handsome, present man.”

“And he had beautiful eyes,” she explained. “And I just thought, ‘I trust this man completely.’ By dessert, I was sort of in his pocket.”

Bergen Prioritized Her Marriage

In a 2015 conversation with Interview Magazine, Bergen also revealed that she has always prioritized marriage above her work.

“I’m not that ambitious,” she said at the time. “I’m always grateful when I get offered something that engages me, it’s for the right amount of time, and I don’t have to leave my husband for more than a week or two. That’s really all I ask.”

Over the past few years, Bergen has enjoyed a quieter life at home with Rose. The couple loved having dinner together at night while watching old episodes of The West Wing.

“My life is a very tiny life now,” Bergen specifically told The New York Times of her and Rose’s routine in 2020. “I don’t mind it, frankly. For someone in their 70s, it’s not a tragedy.”

Rose is survived by Bergen and by two children from a previous marriage. He is also survived by several grandchildren.

Rest in peace, Marshall Rose.
