The Oscar-winning Hollywood star Billy Bob Thornton is currently starring in the Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount Plus show Landman. In a new interview, Thornton is defying Hollywood to push for a new political party that millions of Americans will certainly be able to get onboard with.

Thornton Sounds Off

Landman is a show about the oil business. Indeed, its official IMDB synopsis states that it is “a modern-day tale of fortune seeking in the world of West Texas oil rigs.”

Thornton, 69, recently gave an interview in which he discussed the politics behind the oil business as portrayed in Sheridan’s new show, which premiered back in November of 2024. What Thornton had to say is nothing short of refreshing, especially compared to the nonsense that comes out of the mouths of most Hollywood stars.

“I don’t talk politics publicly, but I think that we need a party called the common sense party,” Thornton said as the audience cheered.

Thornton went on to defend Landman from political criticisms. He recalled a recent press event in which a woman approached him. She proceeded to ask, “how do you justify the morality of a show like this?”

Thornton didn’t hesitate to put the woman in her place with his response.

“Well here’s the thing,” he told her. “First of all, Taylor’s written a show that doesn’t have an agenda. It shows you what happens.”

“So this is just a peek behind the curtain of an industry that a lot of people don’t know anything about,” Thornton continued. “And he’s not saying ‘yay oil or boo oil.’ He’s saying ‘here’s how it works.'”

Thornton Loves Working On Landman

Thornton is currently filming season 2 of Landman in Fort Worth Texas. Last month, Thornton told Gold Derby that Landman “is a show I’d like to work on for a while.”

“I told Taylor, I said ‘as long as you want me around, I’m here for this.’ I really love the show,” he gushed. “I love doing it, I love playing this character, and I love the people I work with. Not only the cast, but the crew also is just stellar.”

Luckily for Thornton, Landman has been a huge hit! Indeed, when it premiered in November, it quickly became Paramount Plus’s most-watched premiere of the past two years.

Thornton stars in Landman as Tommy Norris. The character is described as “an abrasive straight-shooter petroleum landman.” Norris “takes charge of the lucrative and often precarious oilfields of West Texas for M-Tex, a giant oil corporation.”

Sheridan Wrote Landman For Thornton

Sheridan reportedly pitched the show to Thornton at the end of 2021, saying that he had written it specifically for him.

“ You don’t get that handed to you very often,” Thornton admitted. “When somebody says, ‘I think I have your voice, I know how you talk, I know how you think and I’m gonna write this show specifically for you.”

“It was just a great honor,” he added. “To see scripts written that you look at them and you don’t just want to instantly start changing things or where I didn’t have a lot of questions. In other words, it wasn’t like I was going to sit there with them and pick things apart. It was really pretty flawless.”

Thornton stars in Landman alongside Jon Hamm, Demi Moore, Ali Larter, and Andy Garcia. Season two of the show is set to premiere in November of this year. If you haven’t seen season one of Landman, be sure to check it out on Paramount Plus now!
