At the end of December, we reported that the second wife of Jill Biden’s first husband Bill Stevenson had been found dead in their Delaware home. Now, Bill has officially been charged with her murder.
Bill Charged With Murder
Bill, 77, has been hit with first-degree murder charges over the death of his wife Linda Stevenson, 64. He was taken into custody on Monday at the very same home where Linda was found unresponsive in December.
Police responded to a “reported domestic dispute” at this home in Wilmington on December 28, 2025. When they arrived on the scene, Linda was unresponsive.
“Officers immediately administered life-saving measures; however, despite their efforts, Linda Stevenson was later pronounced deceased,” read a press release shared at the time by the New Castle County Police Department.
Linda’s official obituary states that she “passed away unexpectedly” the next day on December 29. It notably makes no mention of Bill. Instead, the obituary said that Linda “is survived by her daughter, Christina (Jeremy); her granddaughter, Ciara (Madison and Logan); her sister Cathy (Tom) Lancaster, nephew Jason and extended relatives.
“Linda will be remembered as tenacious, kind-hearted, and fiercely loyal,” the obituary continued. “Her strength, resilience, and unwavering love for her family and friends will never be forgotten, and her absence will be felt deeply by all who knew her.”
Bill and Linda had been married for nearly 40 years at the time of her death. Prior to that, Bill was married to the future Jill Biden from 1970-1975.
Bill’s History With Jill
Bill has previously claimed that he was still married to Jill when she began seeing Joe Biden in 1975. In 1972, Bill and Jill worked on Joe’s first campaign for the Senate.
“‘I gave $10,900 to his first campaign — in cash,” Bill later told Daily Mail.
Bill went on to say that he first began suspecting that Jill was having an affair with Joe in August of 1974. At the time, Bill was 26, Jill was 23 and Joe was 31.
“I know exactly when it was. Bruce Springsteen was going to play at The Stone Balloon and I had to go to Northern New Jersey to pay him in advance,” Bill alleged. “I asked Jill to go with me and she said no — she had things to do, she had to look after Joe’s kids, Beau and Hunter. It was kind of a big deal to go meet Springsteen. I had no idea she and Joe were that kind of friendly.”
“Then one of her best friends told me she thought Joe and Jill were getting a little too close,” he continued. “I was surprised that she came to me.”
Bill’s suspicions about the affair were soon confirmed when a man told him that Joe had been driving his wife’s car when they were involved in an accident.
“I asked Jill to leave the house, which she did,” Bill remembered. “Her father was begging me to take her back when he found out what was going on. He asked me to give her a second chance, but I wasn’t interested.”
Bill Was ‘Not Surprised’ The Bidens Fell In Love
Despite his claims, Bill didn’t appear to have hard feelings towards Jill decades later. Indeed, he admitted in that interview that he was “not surprised” that the Bidens fell in love.
“Everyone who meets Jill falls in love with her immediately. It’s hard not to,” he explained.
Bill concluded by saying that his second wife Linda was his silver-lining when it came to his divorce from Jill.
“If it wasn’t for my divorce, I would never have met my wife Linda and she’s the greatest thing in my life,” he said.
After being charged with first degree murder, Bill was unable to meet his $500,000 bail. He was subsequently committed to the Howard Young Correctional Institution, where he remains at this time.
