The A-list Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have been embroiled in a nasty divorce battle ever since they split way back in 2016. Though they were each declared legally single in 2019, they have continued to battle it out in court over their assets and custody of their six children.
Now, Jolie has made a move in this legal war that has come as a surprise to many.
Jolie Makes Shocking Legal Move
After two years, Jolie, 49, has dropped her legal battle against the FBI and the Department of Justice over abuse allegations that she made against Pitt, 60.
Jolie had been pursuing court action under the anonymous moniker “Jane Doe” related to an alleged altercation between her and Pitt that reportedly took place on a private jet in 2016. After filing a Freedom of Information Act request in 2021, Jolie was seeking documents from the FBI about their investigation into the claims.
Jolie informed the court that she was dropping her action on Wednesday. She and Pitt will each be paying their own legal fees.
Allegations Against Pitt
Pitt has been accused of pouring red wine and beer over Jolie as their terrified children looked on during a 2016 private jet trip. Jolie accused Pitt of grabbing her by the head. She also claimed that he choked one of their children before hitting another in the face.
Pitt has denied all of these allegations, however. The FBI and the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services immediately launched an investigation into Pitt. In November of 2016, the FBI announced that no charges would be brought.
Jolie and Pitt met on the set of the 2005 movie Mr And Mrs Smith. At the time, Pitt was still married to the former Friends star Jennifer Aniston. They soon split and he began dating Jolie. Pitt and Jolie went on to marry in 2014 in a ceremony at their vineyard Château Miraval in rural France.
Their legal union only lasted 25 months before they broke up. A bitter custody battle over their six children subsquently ensued. They are parents to Maddox, 22, Pax, 20, and Zahara, 19, Shiloh, 18, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 16. Their twins are the only two children who are still minors, yet the custody battle continues to this day.
Jolie Speaks Out
In June of 2020, Jolie claimed that she left Pitt for the “well-being” of her children.
“I separated for the well-being of my family. It was the right decision,” Jolie told Vogue at the time. “I continue to focus on their healing.”
“Some have taken advantage of my silence, and the children see lies about themselves in the media, but I remind them that they know their own truth and their own minds,” she continued. “In fact, they are six very brave, very strong young people.”
A source close to Pitt told People Magazine last month that it’s “pretty shocking” that the two Oscar-winning actors still “can’t find a resolution and finalize the divorce.”
This is clearly a very messy situation for everyone involved. We can only hope that Jolie’s latest move is an indication that a resolution could be on the horizon.
