Earlier this week, we reported that the Hollywood star Alicia Silverstone of Clueless fame had gone quiet after posting a video in which she ate what appeared to be a poisonous berry she had picked up on the street in England.
Thankfully, she made it – and she’s updating fans on how she’s doing.
Silverstone Updates Fans
“Alive and well! Don’t worry…I didn’t swallow,” Silverstone, 47, wrote in a TikTok video. She wrote this alongside a photo of herself posing with a pink background.
This came after Silverstone went viral on TikTok on Monday with a video in which she bit into a fruit she found on the street in England.
“It was on the street and we were discussing whether this was a tomato or not. It’s definitely not, because look at these leaves,” she said in the video as she showed the plant where the fruit came from. “… So what the heck is this?”
As she took a bite of the mysterious fruit, Silverstone said, “I don’t think you’re supposed to eat this. It’s almost like a pepper. Does anyone know what this is?”
Risks Of Eating This Fruit
In the comments section of the video, fans immediately voiced suspicions that the fruit was solanum pseudocapsicum, also known as Jerusalem cherry. Gardening Know How states that the Jerusalem cherry houseplant’s fruit is “toxic,” and “any part of the plant that is ingested can cause poisoning and even death.”
Northern New England Poison Center warns that eating a few berries or leaves from a Jerusalem cherry may cause a person to feel sick, throw up, or have diarrhea. Eating a larger amount can cause drowsiness, hallucinations or heart rate problems.
Dr. Hana Patel also confirmed to Daily Mail that a Jerusalem Cherry can be fatal if eaten.
“If plant or fruit is eaten, early symptoms can include fever, sweating, vomiting, stomach pain, headache and increased heart rate,” she said. “Symptoms are delayed for several hours and can persist for days.”
Dr. Patel went on to say that it can also cause allergic skin reactions.
Fans Respond
“Jerusalem Cherry … They are poisonous,” one fan commented on Silverstone’s video, with another adding,
“Eating random stuff from bushes when you don’t know what it is, is a level of non anxiety that I can only aspire to.”
“Who just picks something they don’t know what it is and eats it?” a third user questioned. A fourth person bluntly wrote, “Stop eating fruits from unknown sources, ma’am.”
Silverstone has been a Hollywood star for decades. Aside from Clueless, she is known for movies like Excess Baggage and Batman & Robin. Off the screen, Silverstone is also known for being a devout vegan.
While it’s a relief to see that Silverstone is okay, it still seems crazy that she would think it was a good idea to sample this fruit off the street in the first place. Here’s hoping she thinks twice before doing that again in the future!
