We previously reported that the Oscar-winning Hollywood star Diane Keaton had died on the morning of Saturday, October 11. She was 79 years-old.
Now, Keaton’s former The Godfather co-star Al Pacino, who had an on-again-off-again relationship with the Annie Hall star from 1971 until 1987, is revealing his heartbreaking regret about her.
Pacino’s Heartbreaking Keaton Regret
In the wake of Keaton’s death, Pacino is regretting that he never asked her to marry him. After sixteen years of dating off and on, Keaton finally gave Pacino an ultimatum. Indeed, she told him to either marry her or they would be done for good. Pacino chose the latter option, and their relationship ended. Now, however, Pacino is wishing that he’d made a different decision.
“Looking back, Al admits the love of his life was Diane who he’s always called, ‘an amazing woman,'” a friend of Pacino’s told Daily Mail. “I know he will forever regret he didn’t make his move when he had the chance.”
“For years after he and Diane split, Al used to say, ‘if it’s meant to be, it’s never too late for a do-over,'” the friend added. “But sadly, now it is.”
The insider went on to say that though Pacino has had romances with many beautiful women over the years, his children have always been his top priority. Sadly, he never had any kids with Keaton, who adopted two children as a single mother later in life.
“Al adores all his kids,” the source explained. “And although he preferred living in New York, he also purchased a home in Los Angeles just so he could spend more time on the West Coast with his children who lived there.”
“Though he and Diane both lived in Beverly Hills, only a few miles from each other for years, they never spoke,’ the insider continued. “I once asked him why, and he told me, ‘There’s no need to talk with each other. We said everything that needed to be said at the time.'”
Pacino And Keaton’s History
Pacino and Keaton met when they worked together on the classic 1972 movie masterpiece The Godfather. He played Michael Corleone, while she portrayed his second wife Kay. They went on to reprise these roles in 1974’s The Godfather Part II and 1990’s The Godfather Part III. Though their relationship had been over for years by the time they made that final film, Pacino and Keaton still worked together beautifully on it.
In the wake of Keaton’s death, a source close to her has opened up about her relationship with Pacino from her perspective.
“There was something about Al that reminded her of a lost orphan in need of love,” this insider explained. “And she felt sure he would never try and take her independence, because he needed her to be strong.”
“Diane could definitely have seen herself marrying Al, and them having kids together,” Keaton’s friend added. “But after years of on and off romance, she felt the time to marry was now or never. And she eventually told him: ‘Marry me or else!'”
“To her surprise, he walked away, insisting no woman was going to push him into doing something he wasn’t ready to do,” the source concluded. “And true to his word, he moved on.”
Keaton Never Married
Though Pacino went on to have four children with three different women, he never married. Keaton also ended up never walking down the aisle. Thankfully, by the end of her life, Keaton had no regrets about this.
“Today I was thinking, I’m the only one in my generation of actresses who has been a single woman all her life,” Keaton said in 2019. “I’m really glad I didn’t get married. I’m an oddball. I remember in high school, this guy came up to me and said, ‘One day you’re going to make a good wife.’ And I thought, ‘I don’t want to be a wife. No.’”
At the time of this writing, no cause of death for Keaton has been publicly revealed. Please join us in saying a prayer for Keaton’s family and friends as they continue to mourn her.
