New York City has a crime problem. If you peruse social media on any given day, you can find instances of random people being attacked.

Now, it’s happened to famous actor Steve Buscemi! As The New York Post put it, the Boardwalk Empire and The Big Lebowski actor was punched by a “maniac” in a random attack.

Buscemi, Former NYFD Volunteer, Attacked

The Brooklyn native must have been surprised to learn that not even he is safe in the City That Never Sleeps.

The Post relates that a “brute” randomly walked up to Buscemi and let off a haymaker. The “deranged assailant” then bailed, and police are still searching for him.

Buscemi, meanwhile, was taken to the hospital, but is in good health after the attack.

Most concerning is that the attack happened on a very famous person in broad daylight, right around Noon.

A witness told the Post:

“I saw he was with a woman, and then through the corner of the window I saw him trip and fall backwards,” the witness said. “He right away got up and ran in the opposite direction. I didn’t see who hit him. It worries me for when we close because we close at 11 and it can get scary around that time.”

The truth is, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer man. What you may not know about Buscemi is that he is a hero.

Buscemi: 9/11 Hero

It’s a story that should be much wider known. Buscemi was once an NYFD firefighter before his big break in acting.

On 9/11, he donned the uniform and equipment and quietly volunteered to help his fellow Americans.

Even more incredible – the story of Buscemi’s 9/11 work remained largely secret until 12 years later when a group shared the information on Facebook.

Buscemi played one of the most thankless roles of that tragedy: sifting through the rubble to find survivors of the terrorist attack.

The actor didn’t come away from the experience unscathed, either. On the 20th anniversary of the attack, Buscemi opened up about getting PTSD from the experience.

“I haven’t experienced any health issues, and I get myself checked out, but definitely…. Post traumatic stress? Absolutely,” Buscemi confessed.

“I was only there for like five days, but when I stopped going and tried to just live my life again, it was really, really hard,” he added. “I was depressed, I was anxious, I couldn’t make a simple decision. All those things. It’s still with me. There are times when I talk about 9/11 and I’m right back there. I start to get choked up and I realize, ‘Ah, this is still a big part of me.’”

He didn’t have to lift a finger, but he did. That’s a hero in our book.

Please join us in saying a prayer for Buscemi as he recovers from this senseless attack. Here’s hoping that the perpetrator is caught soon so that he can be brought to justice!
