The fitness pioneer Richard Simmons has been a known recluse for the last decade. That’s why it’s shocking that he has now reemerged to plan a Broadway show in which the audience will participate in workout numbers!
“I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who is an attorney and manages famous artists in music,” Simmons, 75, posted to social media, according to Page Six. “She wants to do an interactive Broadway show about my life.”
The alleged show will reportedly have an open space near the stage where the audience will be able to join in on workout dance numbers. The idea appears to have breathed new life into Simmons, who can’t be more ecstatic about it.
“I am so excited about the prospect of my own Broadway show,” Simmons said. “I have so many ideas and I’m writing them all down … Broadway is in my blood!”
Daily Mail reported that fans are already speaking out to praise this idea.
“I love it and it would be my dream come true to be a makeup artist for the show,” one fan commented, with another adding, “Omg!! Richard that is such a wonderful idea!! We’ll definitely be there to watch that!! I can’t wait!! Love and miss you bunches Richard!”
“Let me know when auditions are. I can sweat to the oldies and sing my face off,” a third social media user stated. A fourth wrote, “What a wonderful idea! I love broadway and would go in a heartbeat!”

Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1948, Simmons battled obesity throughout his childhood. In the 1970s, he became interested in fitness after moving to Los Angeles, California, and he opened various gyms throughout the city.
Simmons became nationally famous for helping people lose weight throughout the country in the 1980s. He hosted his own fitness show and released exercise videos promoting an active lifestyle.
For the last decade, however, Simmons has been a recluse. He has not made a public appearance since 2014, only communicating with the outside world through his Facebook page.
In 2022, amidst speculation about his poor health, Simmons told The New York Post that he “is happy, healthy, and living the life he has chosen to live.” This was his first public statement to the press in six years.
“Richard is eternally grateful for the continuous outpouring of love and gratitude he has received from across the Globe,” Simmons’ rep said.

Back in March of this year, Simmons issued a statement that he is “not dying” after he posted a cryptic message urging fans to live life to the fullest.
“I have some news to tell you. Please don’t be sad. I am …. dying,” Simmons wrote, according to ABC News. “Oh I can see your faces now. The truth is we all are dying. Every day we live we are getting closer to our death.”
“Why am I telling you this? Because I want you to enjoy your life to the fullest every single day,” he continued. “Get up in the morning and look at the sky… count your blessings and enjoy.”
Afterwards, Simmons issued a clarification and an apology, saying, “Sorry many of you have gotten upset about my message today. Even the press has gotten in touch with me. I am not dying.”
