Fitness personality Richard Simmons has become a popular topic recently after it was reported that Pauly Shore will be playing him in an upcoming biopoc.
On Tuesday, Simmons himself, 75, revealed some personal information and had a motivational message for his fans.
‘Glad to Be Me’
“For as long as I can remember, people have made fun of me,” Simmons wrote. “And people still to this day make fun of me. But you know what? I am glad to be me! And you should be glad that you are you.”
Along with the encouraging words, Simmons made some musical recommendations. “Three songs to listen to: ‘I Will Survive’… ‘I Am What I Am’… and … ‘This Is Me.’ These songs will uplift you,” he wrote.
Whether his message has anything to do with the movie isn’t clear, but he has addressed it.
The Messenger reports, “Shore initially said the production was made with Simmons’ blessing but walked that back after Simmons, first through an intermediary and then on social media, said that this was not the case and that he ‘is not ready to tell his story.’ Weirdly enough, The Court Jester was directed by Jake Williams, who, in 2021, produced a short film featuring Jamie Costa as the late Robin Williams. Costa’s eerie impression went viral, but Williams’ daughter did not particularly enjoy it.”
The story continued:
It gets stranger. Shore said he has a feature-length version of a Simmons project in the works, but that is a different film with different producers — the rather storied Wolper Organization, a company that goes back decades and whose titles for television and film include Roots, The Thorn Birds, Sybil, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Wattstax and L.A. Confidential.
In a statement to The Messenger, the Wolper Organization acknowledged Simmons’ desire to have his story stay off the screen but swatted that away by saying, “While we would love to have him involved, we respect his desire to privacy and plan to produce a movie that honors him, celebrates him and tells a dramatic story. We know he is deeply private and we would never want to invade that, however he is an amazing person, that changed millions of peoples lives and the effect he has had on the world needs to be recognized.”
Celebrities don’t always approve of the movies that are made about them, but some end up approving them after not wanting to in the beginning.
It will be interesting to see how Pauly Shore portrays Simmons. It will also be interesting to see what Richard Simmons ultimately thinks about it in the end.
