The Hollywood star Valerie Bertinelli of “One Day At A Time” fame celebrated her 63rd birthday on Sunday after what she described as the “hardest six years” of her life.

Bertinelli Celebrates 63rd Birthday

Bertinelli took to Instagram on Sunday to post a short video of her suitcase at the Amsterdam Airport, revealing that she was in Europe for her big day.

“I am so over the moon grateful on my birthday this year! I have survived the hardest six years of my life and now,” she wrote in the caption.

“I’m in Amsterdam (one of my favorite places on earth with sweet special memories) And on Thursday, I get to watch my son open for Metallica! Life is good,” she added.

Bertinelli was referring to her only child Wolfgang Van Halen, who she shares with her late ex-husband Eddie Van Halen.

Bertinelli’s Difficult Divorce

Nobody can deny that it’s been a difficult few years for Bertinelli. Her ex-husband Van Halen, who she divorced in 2007 but remained close with, died in 2020 of cancer at the age of 65.

Bertinelli then went through a “wicked” divorce from her second husband, the financial planner Tom Vitale. She filed for divorce from him in November of 2021, but it took an entire year for it to be finalized as a bitter court battle ensued.

“11.22.22 second best day of my life,” she wrote in the caption of an Instagram video after hearing that it was finally finalized.

“Happily divorced. God. Finally. It’s finally over. Yes!” she giddily said in the clip.

Bertinelli Not Open To Finding Love Again

Bertinelli has long been open about how difficult her divorce from Vitale was for her.

“I am gonna be more than happy to be happily divorced and spend the rest of my life alone,” she told TODAY in June of last year. “I’ll be happy that way. Well, with my six cats and my dog and my son, and hopefully one day grandchildren.”

Bertinelli then said that the divorce was so hard for her that she is no longer open to finding love again with someone else.

“Oh God, no,” she said when asked if she will be looking for love again in the future. “Because of the challenges that I’m going through right now, because divorce sucks. I can’t imagine ever trusting anyone again to let into my life. So I have some trust issues that I’m sure I’m going to have to get past. Divorce sucks.”

Bertinelli Starts 2023 On A Positive Note

Heading into 2023, however, Bertinelli appeared to be approaching the year with a more positive attitude.

“From a young age, New Year’s Day has been one of my absolute favorite days, for the last 5-6 years it’s been one of the saddest,” she wrote on Instagram on January 1. “No more. There is so much to look forward to now, when before it just looked endlessly sad, scary, lonely and stressful.”

“I have no idea what’s ahead for me and I’m not worried. I’m free,” she continued. “This new years day, 2023, is the first day of the rest of my life! I wish all of you every bit of joy and happiness and kindness that you claim. It’s all yours. Grab it!”

Bertinelli has been through so much that it comes as no surprise that she sees this as the “hardest six years” of her life. We’re glad that she’s come out the other side now, and we hope that she enjoyed her birthday in Amsterdam!
