The singer and talk show host Kelly Clarkson released a new song early this morning, and she used it to trash her “weak” ex-husband Brandon Blackstock after their bitter divorce.

Clarkson Sings About Bitter Divorce

Though Clarkson doesn’t mention Blackstock by name in her new song “Me,” it seems clear by the lyrics that she’s referring to their divorce in it.

“I told you I wanted you, but you needed me to need you,” she sang. “Your insecurity was the death of you and me. Too many times you questioned, ‘What were my intentions?’ I never gave you reasons. You’re the one with secrets.”

Clarkson, 40, proceeded to list out some of the insecurities and secrets that led to the demise of her marriage before letting her own true feelings about her split be known.

“You are the reason I said goodbye, ’cause I don’t need somebody to scold me,” she sang. “Don’t need somebody that hurts me. Don’t need somebody who feels weak standing next to me.”

To drive the very personal nature of her song home, Clarkson posted the lyrics of it to her Instagram page.

Clarkson also seemingly addressed her divorce from Blackstock in her song “Mine,” which came out this morning as well. She’d teased this song earlier this month with a brief clip of her singing it in a recording studio.

“Someone’s gonna show you how a heart can be used, like you did mine,” she sang in the video.

Clarkson’s Divorce

Clarkson and Blackstock, who is the former stepson of Reba McEntire, married in 2013, and they went on to have two children together before they split seven years later. They had likely known each other since at least 2007, when Clarkson signed on to be represented by the music management company that is owned by Blackstock’s father Narvel.

Months after Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock back in 2020, Narvel hit her with a lawsuit for allegedly failing to pay his management company the rightful commission he claimed that she owed them. In the suit, Narvel alleged that Clarkson owed $1.4 million as well as $5.4 million for future commission as part of their original agreement that she would pay 15% of her earnings to his company.

Clarkson fired back with a countersuit on the grounds that both Blackstock and Narvel had violated the California Labor Code because they were never actually licensed to do their jobs. The legal battle remains ongoing at this time.

Clarkson Admits Divorce Was ‘Horrible’

Clarkson has been open about how difficult the divorce battle was for her.

“It’s horrible. There are so many hard parts. The hardest for me is the kids. That’s the hardest for me,” she previously said. “I think as women we are trained … to take it all on and you can deal with it and you’re fine, but it’s your babies that you worry about.”

During the fall premiere of her talk show back in 2020, Clarkson admitted that she “didn’t see” her divorce coming.

“[It] has brought a lot of change also to my personal life. Definitely didn’t see anything coming that came,” she said at the time, according to The Sun. “But what I’m dealing with is hard because it involves more than just my heart. It involves a lot of little hearts.”

“You know, we have four kids and divorce is never easy, and we’re both from divorced families, so we know the best thing here is to protect our children and their little hearts,” she added.

Divorce is never easy, particularly when the couple is in the public eye. While writing this music about her divorce was undoubtedly therapeutic for Clarkson, it will be interesting to see if she regrets putting Blackstock on blast publicly, given the fact that they share two young children.
