Why No Jay Briscoe AEW Tribute, WWE Champion Injured

Why didn't AEW put on a full tribute for Jay Briscoe last night? WNZ has the details. Plus, a WWE Champion is injured.

The wrestling world is still mourning the tragic loss of Jay Briscoe. While AEW kicked off Dynamite with an “In Memoriam” photo for the star, there was no full tribute. WNZ has more insight into the reason behind this.

Why No Jay Briscoe AEW Tribute

Many fans were disappointed that there was no full tribute for Jay Briscoe, whose real name was Jamin Pugh, during the recent episode of Dynamite. Some were expecting something done that resembled what AEW did for Brodie Lee.

Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio talks about this in a recent episode. He notes the company was not allowed to do anything because Warner Media nixed the idea.

When Pugh was alive, he and his brother Mark were unable to appear on AEW programming due to homophobic tweets sent out over 10 years ago. Tweets that Briscoe had shown remorse about and apologized for.

Despite the fact that Dynamite was not a full tribute show, talent wore black armbands in his honor. Those that did so include Jay Lethal, Bryan Danielson, and the Young Bucks.

In addition, Jay Briscoe’s name was brought up a number of times during the show by commentary. Announcer Excalibur paid tribute to Briscoe, as Dynamite went off the air.

In addition, Tony Khan taped a full tribute show for Jay Briscoe, later that night. This will be free to view for fans on either the Honor Club app when it’s released or ROH’s YouTube channel.

More On Why There Wasn’t A Jay Briscoe AEW Tribute

Meltzer goes on to state that whenever ROH gets back to TV shows, the first one will have a tribute to Briscoe. It will highlight some of his best matches.

Fans should also expect a memorial dedicated to him at the Supercard of Honor event. This takes place on Friday, March 31st, at the Galen Center in Los Angeles.

Xavier Woods has not been in action since December 27th. Seems like one-half of the NXT Tag Champs, is injured.

WWE Champion Injured

Kofi Kingston recently confirmed to the New York Post that his partner is injured. The good news is that Kingston also revealed that he’s getting “better and better” during his time off.

While Xavier had been out of action, Kofi has still competed on and off television in singles matches. As Kingston puts it, doing so has enabled Woods to recover, but still allow their storyline to move forward.

Kofi notes during the interview that Xavier will be “good in no time”. He also states that Woods has “made a lot” of progress.

Xavier Woods Return To The Ring

This past Tuesday on NXT, an announcement was made that Kingston and Woods will be defending their Tag Titles against Gallus and Pretty Deadly at Vengeance Day in a triple-threat bout. This takes place on Saturday, February 4th.

This will be Woods’ first time in action, in over a month. Here’s hoping he’s ready to rumble by the time the event rolls around.

Last December 10th Kofi and Xavier defeated Pretty Deadly to win the NXT Tag Titles, making them WWE triple crown tag champions.  Here’s hoping they have a good run with their current gold.
