One day after leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a decisive victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, quarterback Patrick Mahomes is opening up about why he plans to “stay out of the way” and take a step back when it comes to whether or not his own children will follow in his footsteps by playing sports.

But first, it should be noted that Patrick made history last night by becoming the fastest quarterback in NFL history to reach 20,000 career passing yards, according to Sports Illustrated.

‘I Want To Stay Out Of The Way’

Patrick, 27, is father to 18-month-old Sterling with wife Brittany Mahomes, and they are expecting a baby boy in the coming weeks. During an interview on Sunday night, Mahomes revealed why he intends to “stay out the way” in his kids’ possible athletic interests.

“I think that’s the best thing for me,” he explained, according to People Magazine. “I’m going to help teach my son, my daughter, all the fundamentals and whatever they want to learn. But at the same time, I want to stay out of the way and let it be about them.”

“That’s what my dad did growing up, that’s what my parents did,” the NFL star added. “They let it be about me, let me out there and have fun, they didn’t pressure me to do anything. I think that’s why I’m in the position I am today.”

Brittany Surprises Patrick By Bringing Daughter On Field

Patrick and his wife Brittany were high school sweethearts who married back in March after becoming engaged in September of 2020. Earlier this month, Brittany surprised the accomplished NFL star by bringing their daughter Sterling on the field during one of his games for the first time.

“Ster girl stayed up past her bedtime to surprise her Daddy!! Her first time on the field to see him?❤️?,” Brittany wrote of the moment on Instagram.

“She’s been in the stadium before, but she was very young and sat in the back and didn’t really know what was going on,” Patrick said of the moment on The Drive on Audacy’s 610 Sports Radio. “This is the first time she actually got to be on the field.”

“It was past her bedtime, that’s why I didn’t expect her to be at the game, but it was cool to see her on the field before the game,” he continued. “She had to leave pretty quickly because she got real tired, real fast.”

Patrick’s Christian Faith

Aside from his family, Patrick’s Christian faith is one of the other most important things to him in his life.

“Faith has always been big with me,” the quarterback said last year, according to God Reports. “I’m glorifying Him every single time I’m out there. I understand that He’s given me a lot of blessings in my life, and I’m trying to maximize them and glorify Him.”

“My faith has always been a big part of what I do,” he added in another interview. “I’ve grown up in church and faith really helps you know why you’re playing the game, and who you’re doing it for.”

God bless Patrick for showing the world that you can be a devoted father and good Christian, while also being a massively successful athlete! Whether they follow in his footsteps by getting involved in sports or not, his children are lucky to have a dad like him.
