Queen Elizabeth tried to act as a peacemaker for Meghan Markle and her estranged father Thomas Markle, urging the wife of Prince Harry to give her dad another shot, royal expert claims in new book.

Queen Wanted Meghan To Make Peace With Her Father

In her book The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth’s Legacy and the Future of the Crown, renowned royal expert Katie Nicholl alleges that the late Queen was nervous about Harry marrying Meghan without ever having met her father. She also had a problem with Meghan and her father being estranged from one another.

The Queen, keen to support anyone marrying into her family, did her best to pacify the situation and get to know the new duchess,” Nicholl wrote, according to Fox News. “The Queen was aware that Meghan’s extended family had posed difficulties for the duchess, but she was less bothered about the step-siblings and distant relatives who wanted to cash in on the soap opera.”

“The fact that Harry had not yet met Thomas Markle and that Meghan was still not speaking to her father did concern her, and while she rarely intervenes she made a point of speaking to Harry and Meghan about the situation,” she added.

Queen ‘Thought The Whole Thing Could Have Been Better Handled’

A close friend of the royal family told Nicholl, “It was the Queen’s feeling that Meghan should sort things out with her father and that Harry should have met Thomas before the wedding… She thought the whole thing could have been better handled.”

Meghan has not spoken to her father since before her May of 2018 wedding, which he did not attend. At the time, Markle issued a statement explaining the situation and hoped her father “can be given the space he needs to focus on his health.”

“Meghan felt unsupported in the run-up to her May 2018 wedding, which was marred by members of her own family selling stories to the press and culminated with her father, Thomas Markle, having a heart attack and being forced to pull out of the ceremony,” Nicholl asserted.

In the lead-up to the wedding, Thomas allegedly teamed up with paparazzi to stage photos of himself trying on tuxedos for the big event. After receiving tons of backlash for this, Thomas reportedly suffered a heart attack, which is why he could not attend the wedding. This led to Meghan being walked down the aisle by Harry’s father Charles, who is now the King of England in the wake of the Queen’s death.

‘The Queen Did What She Could’

Though the Queen was not successful in convincing Meghan to mend fences with her father, she tried her best to get her to talk to him again.

“From a practical point, the Queen did what she could for the family’s newest member and given Meghan’s boots-on-ground approach made sure the new duchess had the support she needed,” Nicholl said.

Two years after their wedding, Meghan and Harry stepped down as senior royals and moved across the world to Southern California, where they have since signed lucrative entertainment deals with Netflix and Spotify. The Queen sadly passed away earlier this month at the age of 96, and she was said to be very upset by Meghan and Harry’s decision to leave the royal family.
