Naomi Judd’s Granddaughter In Prison Won’t Attend Funeral

The country music world is in mourning this week after the legendary singer Naomi Judd reportedly took her own life this past weekend at the age of 76. Now, it’s been revealed that her granddaughter Grace Kelley will not be able to attend her funeral because she is in prison serving an eight-year sentence for cooking and dealing meth.

Dorinda Carter, the spokeswoman for the state Department of Correction, told Daily Mail that Kelley, 26, didn’t ask to be released from the Tennessee prison where she is serving her sentence.

“We have not received a request,” Carter said. “No one has asked.”

Kelley, who is the daughter of the singer Wynonna Judd, was sentenced to eight years behind bars after being arrested in 2020. While she was granted parole in 2021, she soon was put back in prison after she violated the conditions of her release.

Carter went on to explain that the warden at the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center in Nashville, where Kelley is being held, often allows inmates to leave the facility to attend the funerals of family members. She added that requests to do this can come from family members, attorneys, or “the inmate herself,” but nobody connected to Kelley has made any such request.

Kelley’s Troubles With The Law

Public records state that Kelley was first arrested in June of 2016, which was around the time that she turned 20, for the manufacture, distribution, and sale of methamphetamine. She served 30 days behind bars after pleading guilty, and she was then released on probation. Unfortunately, Kelley was not able to stay off drugs, and she was arrested again in April of 2020.

Wynonna has been supportive of her daughter throughout her struggles with drugs.

“I will tell you this. My daughter is the strongest Judd woman in our ‘herstory,'” she told Fox News in February of 2020. “She’s healthier than I was at 23. How she got there – I would not go that way, but I was also sequestered. That could have been me if I didn’t have music.”

Naomi’s Suicide

Sources say that Naomi committed suicide on Saturday, just one day before she was set to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame with Wynonna.

“Today we sisters experienced a tragedy,” Wynonna and her sister Ashley said in a statement announcing her death. “We lost our beautiful mother to the disease of mental illness. We are shattered. We are navigating profound grief and know that as we loved her, she was loved by her public. We are in unknown territory.”
