Jane Fonda Talks About Being ‘Closer To Death’ At 85

The Hollywood star Jane Fonda is opening up in a new interview about how she is “closer to death” at the age of 85.

‘I’m Closer To Death’

“I’m super-conscious that I’m closer to death,” Fonda said, according to Fox News. “And it doesn’t really bother me that much.”

“What bothers me is that my body is, you know basically not mine!” she added. “My knees are not mine, my hips are not mine, my shoulder’s not mine. You’re looking at somebody who’s only me from here up.”

Fonda has stayed as busy as ever, recently completing work on the movie Moving On with her good friend Lily Tomlin.

“The fact is if you’re alive and relatively healthy at an older – I mean, I’m almost 85,” she continued. “The fact that I’m still alive and working, wow, who cares if I don’t have my old joints? And I can’t ski or bike or run anymore? …  You know, you can be really old at 60, and you can be really young at 85. Health!”

Fonda Gives Up Alcohol

In this same interview, Fonda discussed giving up alcohol because she did not like the way it impacted her as she aged.

“Even with one drink, like, if I had a martini tonight, I would be at half-mast tomorrow,” she said, according to Page Six. “Now, that wasn’t true when I was younger. But as you get older, I think alcohol affects you differently. And I only have so many tomorrows left. I don’t want to be at half-mast for any of them!”

Fonda and Tomlin are currently promoting the seventh and final season of their Netflix show “Grace & Frankie,” which drops on Friday.

“We both have been told by women who have faced terrible things that watching ‘Grace and Frankie’ has kept their head above water, given them hope,” Fonda said.

Tomlin On Her Friendship With Fonda

Tomlin said that her friendship with Fonda was only “deepened” from working on this show.

“I love Jane from a long time ago. And so it seemed so natural,” she said, according to People Magazine.

“The show was offered to us. And I just knew we would do it because it was about something that was important to us, aging women, and them not being marginalized and being treated like human beings and how they would want to be treated and thought of,” she continues. “And so it just felt so natural. I didn’t even expect, she didn’t expect it either. We didn’t expect to be on a hit series at this point in our lives.”

You can check out Fonda and Tomlin in action later this week when the latest season of “Grace & Frankie” debuts on Netflix on Friday.

James Conrad

James Conrad’s passion for politics is only overshadowed by his longstanding interest in Hollywood. His unique perspective as a gay conservative fuels him to challenge celebrity views and those who think they have a right to tell anyone how to think or vote. James proudly wields his minority point of view to combat identity politics and cut through his typecast. Fun fact: James’ guilty pleasure is the British royal family.
