Many have wondered for years whether or not Camilla Parker Bowles, the wife of Prince Charles, would actually be crowned as Queen Consort or a different title when he takes the throne. Over the weekend, Queen Elizabeth revealed Camilla’s fate for the very first time.
At the time of Prince Charles’ marriage to Camilla – both divorcees – the official intention was for Camilla to be known as the Princess Consort.
However, the Queen’s intervention means obstacles to her becoming Queen Consort have now been removed. She will have a Royal role beside Charles.
Daily Mail reported that Queen Elizabeth, 95, shocked everyone on Saturday night when she made the “surprise announcement” that Camilla will be crowned as Queen Consort when Charles becomes King.
The Queen dropped this bomb in a Platinum Jubilee statement to the nation in which she marked her record-breaking 70 years on the British throne.
“When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service,” the Queen said, signing the message, “Your Servant, Elizabeth R.”

A spokesperson for Charles and Camilla responded by saying that “the Prince of Wales will be issuing a statement of congratulation to the Queen on Accession Day. He and the Duchess of Cornwall are touched and honoured by Her Majesty’s words.”
“We are deeply conscious of the honour represented by my mother’s wish,” Charles later added in a statement of his own. “As we have sought together to serve and support Her Majesty and the people of our communities, my darling wife has been my own steadfast support throughout.”
Cosmopolitan reported that Charles’ son Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton made their approval of this known by “liking” the Queen’s statement when it was posted to Instagram.
Royal historian Robert Lacey also spoke out to give his thoughts on the meaning behind the Queen’s message, and why she chose now to issue it.
“In the message, she was acknowledging her own mortality and looking to the future,” he explained to People Magazine. “As she thought about her father George VI, she would have also thought about her mother and the importance she played as a partner to him. And then, of course, with the passing of Prince Philip, she is considering the sacrifices and difficulties of being a consort.”
Lacey went on to acknowledge that questions surrounding whether or not Camilla would be queen had been circulating for years.
“This was the big remaining question mark and it has now been resolved, and any consent from the Prime Minister of the day for the title is a formality,” Lacey added. “Some people might have thought she would look backwards over her reign with this message, but she was in fact looking forwards in a positive way.”
Camilla is the second wife of Prince Charles, who was originally married to the late Princess Diana, before getting divorced in 1996.
He and Camilla married nine years later, and they have been together ever since.
Over the years, Camilla has been far less popular with the public than Diana was, so some Royal fans were less than pleased by the Queen’s announcement about her future:
