Jon Lovitz Defends ‘The Goldbergs’ Star, Says Cancel Culture Is Just McCarthyism

Comedian Jon Lovitz, who got his big break on “Saturday Night Live”, spoke out out this week to blast cancel culture and show support for his friend, ‘The Goldbergs’ star Bryan Callen.

The 63-year-old comedian went so far as to compare cancel culture to the infamous Hollywood blacklist of the 1940s. At the time, celebrities suspected of being communists were railroaded from the entertainment industry.

Jon Lovitz Compares Cancel Culture To McCarthyism

“I’ll just say it, it’s no different than McCarthyism,” Lovitz told Page Six

Lovitz went on to say that it is his “job to satirize what’s going on in society and point out the hypocrisies” and that “cancel culture” makes it harder for him to do that.

“As soon as you say to a comedian like me, ‘You can’t say that,’ the first thing in my head is, ‘Oh, and now I have to,’” the fed-up comic continued, adding that there is “a difference between making jokes and being outright mean.”

“If you don’t have the ability to laugh at yourself, don’t go to a comedy club,” Lovitz explained. “I’m not changing my act. If you’re watching TV and you don’t like the show, change the channel. It’s very simple.”

Jon Lovitz Defends ‘The Goldbergs’ Actor Bryan Callen

Not stopping there, Lovitz also slammed a Los Angeles Times article that came out last summer in which four women accused “The Goldbergs” actor Bryan Callen of rape and sexual misconduct.

“He should not be canceled. It’s horrible,” Lovitz said, defending his friend. “I remember reading the article and thought it was ridiculous. One girl said she was 24 and he was 42. She was his girlfriend for three years and she says, ‘I’m 32 now, he should have known better.’ Known what better? You’re 24 to 27, you’re not a kid. What did he do? He had a girlfriend who was younger? So? I like women that are younger, not illegal, most guys do.”

“When someone does something really horrible, raping someone, of course, you should be in prison, obviously, but stuff like a girl is on a bad date or the relationship ends and she’s mad that it ended because she got dumped, come on!” he continued.

The two comedians go way back, having performed in the same clubs more than a decade ago. Lovitz even appeared on Callen’s eponymous show.

His Early Struggles As a Comedian

In this same interview, Lovitz recalled struggling in his early days in the entertainment world.

The comedian says he spent seven years surviving on $600 a month while working as an actor with the Groundlings comedy troupe.

His father refused to help him out financially after he graduated from college. A life lesson for which the successful actor is now grateful.

“When I finally got to ‘SNL,’ I thanked him for not giving me money because it really motivated me to do something,” he said. “I was eating 19-cent chicken pot pies. I didn’t go to a movie in seven years. I didn’t go out for dinner.”

Jon Lovitz will next be appearing at The Laugh Factory in Las Vegas, Nevada from July 12 to 21.

Cancel culture has become so powerful that just speaking out against it puts one at risk for cancellation.

I personally applaud Jon Lovitz for having the guts to speak out against cancel culture. And I agree – it has gone WAY too far!

James Conrad’s passion for politics is only overshadowed by his longstanding interest in Hollywood. His unique perspective as a gay conservative fuels him to challenge celebrity views and those who think they have a right to tell anyone how to think or vote. James proudly wields his minority point of view to combat identity politics and cut through his typecast. Fun fact: James’ guilty pleasure is the British royal family.
