Prince Philip Described As ‘Heaven-Sent’ For The Queen In This Intimate Look At Their 73-Year Marriage

A lady-in-waiting for Queen Elizabeth is sharing her personal memories of Prince Philip in the wake of his recent passing at age 99. She describes the Queen’s husband of 73 years as “always interesting and fun” and also always ready for a joke.

Lady Prudence Penn Remembers Prince Philip

Lady Prudence Penn told Tatler that Philip was a “heaven-sent consort for Her Majesty in every way.”

“I loved the way he would boost the Queen’s ego by telling her how lovely she looked on their way to an engagement,” recalled Lady Prudence, 95. “He knew how to bring the best out of a woman, and I am sure his advice and encouragement to her were paramount in their relationship.”

She went on to say that Philip was “one of the most practical men I have ever met,” before adding that being around him was “always interesting and fun.” She also talked about his unique sense of humor, remembering that he once cracked a joke after she broke her leg.

“When he arrived, I was standing at the top of the steps up to my front door. I said: ‘How lovely to see you, sir. I am afraid I cannot curtsy.’ He turned round as if to leave and said: ‘In that case, perhaps I had better go,'” she said. “It was the kind of remark for which he was sometimes criticized by people who didn’t fully understand his sense of humor.”

The Royal Wanted A ‘Lower-Key Funeral’

While Philip’s funeral last month was a scaled-down affair due to COVID-19, Lady Prudence thinks this is what Philip would have wanted.

“He had always wanted to have a lower-key funeral than that which was ordained for him, and due to current circumstances he got his wish,” she explained. “It was a funeral that proved to be one of the most moving, fitting and memorable occasions.”

“He was totally consistent. You knew where you were with him,” Lady Prudence concluded. “He cared not a jot for what people thought of him. He got on with the job.”

Queen Pays Tribute To Prince Philip

Philip died at Windsor Castle on April 9, two months shy of his 100th birthday. When the Queen celebrated her 95th birthday days later, she spoke out to express her “great sadness” at Prince Philip’s death while also thanking the public for their support.

“I have, on the occasion of my 95th birthday today, received many messages of good wishes, which I very much appreciate,” she said. “While as a family we are in a period of great sadness, it has been a comfort to us all to see and to hear the tributes paid to my husband, from those within the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world.”

Rest in peace, Prince Philip.

James Conrad

James Conrad’s passion for politics is only overshadowed by his longstanding interest in Hollywood. His unique perspective as a gay conservative fuels him to challenge celebrity views and those who think they have a right to tell anyone how to think or vote. James proudly wields his minority point of view to combat identity politics and cut through his typecast. Fun fact: James’ guilty pleasure is the British royal family.
