Oprah Got Stonewalled By Sally Field After Asking An ‘Inappropriate Question’ About Burt Reynolds

Oprah Winfrey recently was a guest on Rob Lowe’s podcast “Literally!” The talk show queen confessed to the most cringeworthy moment in her decades-long interview history. It involves a question she asked Sally Field about Burt Reynolds.

The “St. Elmo’s fire” star mentioned Burt Reynolds. Oprah suddenly jumped at the chance to share her biggest regret that involved an interview question.

It truly is so awful that it’s hard to imagine such a lapse of judgement on Winfrey’s part.

Burt Reynolds And Sally Field’s Romance

Lowe said he disliked the way talk shows today involve games. He misses the old days when interviews were after-hours, must-see TV.

He suggested someone like Burt Reynolds would be a great host.

“Oh, Burt Reynolds!” Oprah said. “Oh, gosh! I have a Burt Reynolds story.”

As you may remember, many years ago Sally Field and Burt Reynolds co-starred in “Smokey and the Bandit.”

The two Hollywood A-listers also dated.

Reynolds later described Sally as the one who got away and the true love of his life. While interviewing Field many years ago, Oprah went there and immediately regretted it.

While Burt was viewed as a sex symbol, there often was a lot of chatter about his hairline.

Mixing that up in a question about Sally and Burt’s romance proved to enough to drop a bomb on the interview and fill Oprah with regret decades later.

Oprah Asked Burt Reynold’s Toupee

“My big mistake: I asked her, ‘Does Burt sleep with his toupee on?'” the talk show host remembered. “I even say now, I cringe to even think that I asked that question. But I asked it because the producers are like, ‘You have to ask, you have to ask, you have to ask. That’s what everybody wants to know.'”

“And so I asked it, and she went cold on me,” she continued. “She shut down, and I could not get in again.”

Lowe knows Sally Field well and he completely understood and appreciated the reaction Oprah received.

“She’s one of the most amazing actors I’ve ever known,” Rob Lowe said about his “Brothers and Sisters” co-star. “But when Sally goes cold, it’s like Khrushchev in the Cold War,” he said. “She will bury you.”

Oprah recognizes that she deserved the ice cold treatment from Sally Field.

“It was like, ‘Whoa, Sally went cold on me on live TV,'” she said. “I deserved it, I deserved it, I deserved it, ’cause that is such an inappropriate question.”
