Tim Allen Reveals What It’s Like To Reunite With ‘Home Improvement’ Costar Richard Karn

Tim Allen and Richard Karn spent years starring together on “Home Improvement” from 1991-1999. Now, they are teaming up once again to host the reality show “Assembly Required,” in which they will oversee contestants rebuilding everyday household items.

Here’s the trailer:

Allen And Karn Are Still Close

While “Home Improvement” has been off the air for over two decades, Allen and Karn say that they have remained close over the years.

“All of us are real close,” Allen told Entertainment Tonight. “I still see Richard way too much, boy, way too much.”

“It just doesn’t feel like 30 years,” Karn added in agreement.

The two stars added that their new show is much like “Tool Time,” the show their two characters on “Home Improvement” starred in.

“I wanted to have Richard a part of this because it seemed like a reality extension of what Tool Time really was, where I add more power to it, I break something, he’d be the reality side of it, and it was a good fit,” Allen explained. “This [show] is improv for 12 hours a day and I’m out of my mind. It’s just like Al Borland and Tim Taylor.”

“Well, it’s improv with editing,” Karn continued. “Because more than half of the stuff we can’t even use. I don’t think America is ready for that.”

‘Home Improvement’ Fans Will Love This Show

Both Allen and Karn think “Home Improvement” fans will get a kick out of “Assembly Required.”

“I think it resonates with the parents that grew up with it and are now able to show their kids something that they can all sit together and watch,” Karn said, with Allen adding, “They always celebrated the family. The couple that got along, raised the kids.”

Allen previously said that filming “Assembly Required” turned out to be a much more emotional experience than either of the two stars anticipated.

“It got pretty emotional. I’m not a big fan of judging art or movies or anything, and this was really difficult because the interest and the dedication for these men and women was unbelievable,” Allen said. “However, we set the show up to have a winner and it got very difficult for me … to judge people.”

James Conrad

James Conrad’s passion for politics is only overshadowed by his longstanding interest in Hollywood. His unique perspective as a gay conservative fuels him to challenge celebrity views and those who think they have a right to tell anyone how to think or vote. James proudly wields his minority point of view to combat identity politics and cut through his typecast. Fun fact: James’ guilty pleasure is the British royal family.
