Stevie Wonder Stuns Oprah With News Of His Imminent Move To Ghana, Says US Is ‘More Dangerous Than Ever Before’

Stevie Wonder is doing what plenty of other celebrities have just threatened. He’s packing his bags and moving out of the country. The singer told Oprah Winfrey he is permanently moving to Ghana and putting the United States in his rearview mirror.

The “I Just Called To Say I Love You” singer sat down for a virtual interview with Oprah at the end of last year.

It took a while, but Stevie’s exodus is finally getting some attention.

He wants to move somewhere he feels valued. The man who has made millions of dollars in the United States doesn’t feel welcome and accepted here.

This is not a vacation. He is leaving and it sounds like he is taking his family, too.

He learned to play piano, drums and harmonica by age 9 and signed to Motown in 1961. A Michigan native, he has won 25 Grammy Awards, an honorary award, and has been nominated 74 times.

Stevie Wonder Is Moving To Ghana

Stevie told Oprah he wants to “see this nation smile again. And I want to see it before I leave to travel to move to Ghana because I’m going to do that.”

Oprah was stunned. She asked him to repeat himself.

“I am,” the singer reiterated. “I don’t want to see my children’s, children’s children have to say ‘Oh please like me, please respect me, please know that I am important, please value me.’ What is that?”

Given that Stevie has made a fortune from Americans, it’s interesting that he doesn’t believe he is valued. He’s live is the epitome of the American dream.

Stevie Wonder supported Joe Biden in the 2020 election. Even Biden’s win isn’t prompting him to remain in the United States.

This isn’t the first time Stevie Wonder has said he was considering moving to Ghana. In 1994, he said he felt there was “more of a sense of community” than in the US.

America Needs Five Years Of Atonement

Oprah asked the legendary singer if these times feel different than previous eras.

Stevie believes American needs “five years of atonement” because it feels more dangerous than ever before.

He believes it is more dangerous today than before the Civil Rights Movement took hold decades ago.

He wants us to “get into good trouble” and fight for civil rights. You can watch that clip in the tweeted video below.
