Following the news that the UFC Vegas 14 will no longer feature its original main event, it’s being reported that UFC 256 has also lost its headliner.
The bantamweight and featherweight champ Amanda Nunes was booked to fight featherweight contender on December 12th. But, ESPN is reporting that sources say Nunes has been forced off the event due to an undisclosed injury.
Anderson responded to the news with the following tweet,
Wishing Amanda a speedy recovery. UFC are rescheduling the bout for a date early next year. The goal remains the same. We’ll be ready.
And in a follow-up statement, Anderson reportedly said this.
“All I was told was she has a ‘serious medical issue’ and that they’re working on rescheduling the bout currently. Obviously, it sucks because we’ve been working so hard for this, but I hope she has a speedy recovery and the goal remains the same.
Nothing has ever come easy for me. This is just another part of the journey and we’ll be ready for whatever date they set. Our time is coming one way or another.”
Hopefully, Nunes does have a full and speedy recovery, and we get to see this fight sooner than later.
It will be interesting to see what the UFC does here, in terms of whether the promotion tries to add another big-name fight, in an effort to keep it as a pay-per-view.
The event is also expected to feature new bantamweight champ Petr Yan taking on Aljamain Sterling. While that’s a must-see bout for hardcore fans, it’s not a fight with a mainstream pull that’s required to move PPV buys.
Originally, UFC 256 was also set to feature welterweight champ Kamaru Usman taking on Gilbert Burns. But that fight was also pushed due to injuries Usman was dealing with.
