Fans of country music legend Dolly Parton are saying that she “saved the world” with her generous donation that directly supported the research and development of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine.
A tweet has gone viral showing that the “Dolly Parton COVID-19 Research Fund” is listed in the footnotes of a New England Journal of Medicine article about Moderna’s vaccine, which is said to be 94.5% effective against coronavirus in preliminary findings.
Back in April, Dolly donated $1 million to coronavirus research at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, which helped develop Moderna’s vaccine.
“That’s what I understand this morning,” Dolly Parton told TODAY about learning that her donation played a role in Moderna’s success.
“I’m just happy that anything I do can help somebody else, and when I donated the money to the Covid fund, I just wanted it to do good. Evidently, it is. Let’s just hope we find a cure real soon.”
Parton had announced back in April that she would be making the $1 million donation.
“My Longtime friend Dr. Naji Abumrad, who’s been involved in research at Vanderbilt for many years, informed me that they were making some exciting advancements towards research of the coronavirus for a cure,” she wrote on Instagram back in April.
“I am making a donation of $1 million to Vanderbilt towards that research and to encourage people that can afford it to make donations.”

Social media users have been having a field day with this, with many joking that Parton “cured coronavirus.”
Everything seems to be coming up Dolly these days!
She just released her first Christmas album in decades, “A Holly Dolly Christmas”, and also has a new movie musical, Christmas On The Square, that premieres on Netflix November 22nd.
The country legend’s 2020 Christmas wish is to cheer people up after months of dealing with the pandemic.
“I’ve been wanting to release a Christmas album for a while now because I just love Christmas,” Dolly said recently. “This year became the perfect time to spread some extra joy.”
“I think the spirit of Christmas and what it truly means can spill out into our families and make this a better Christmas than ever;” she added. “Hopefully, ‘A Holly Dolly Christmas’ will make everyone feel holly and jolly this season.”
Though Dolly is getting ready to turn 75 in two months, she has no plans to slow down. In fact, she may be celebrating her birthday in a way that nobody could have seen coming.
“I don’t plan to retire. I just turned 74 and I plan to be on the cover of Playboy magazine again,” she told 60 Minutes Australia. “See I did Playboy Magazine years ago and I thought it’d be such a hoot if they’ll go for it — I don’t know if they will — if I could be on the cover again when I’m 75.”
God bless you, Dolly Parton! You really are one of a kind.
