Cannonier posts statement

The 36-year-old Cannonier was booked to face Whittaker in the co-headliner of UFC 254, on account of a three-fight winning streak that included stoppage wins over David Branch, Anderson Silva and Jack Hermansson.

In the high stakes fight, however, Whittaker outstruck him by a 75 to 58 margin and on the bout via unanimous decision. As it turns out, however, Cannonier’s volume was almost certainly impacted by the fact he sustained a broken arm, not long into the contest.

Following the defeat, the former heavyweight shared out the statement below.

“That didn’t go exactly how I wanted but my spirits remain high and I’m happy with how I fought all things considered. The very first kick he threw broke or fractured my left ulna I couldn’t find my grove and adjust quickly to get the W so I’ll take my L with pride.

@robwhittakermma certainly lived up to my expectations before and after the fight. Congrats mate. Enjoy Xmas and the new [baby]. It was a hell of an experience to be here. Can’t wait to go again.”

Next steps for Cannonier?

It will be interesting to see who Cannonier faces next. The hard-hitting fighter was ranked #2 in the UFC’s middleweight division, heading into the bout. So, chances are he’ll fight a top-ranked contender next (and hopefully he’s not sidelined for too long on account of his arm).

What about Paulo Costa? Who is coming off a stoppage loss to the champ Israel Adesanya last month?

On paper, it has the makings of something special right?
