A rematch between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz hasn’t been scheduled just yet. But, if and when the fight happens, Dana White’s confirmed Masvidal will be defending the ‘BMF’ title.

White says Masvidal wants to defend the ‘BMF’ belt

On Tuesday, reports came out that the UFC is actively working on making Masvidal – Diaz 2 a reality, and that the promotion’s trying to book the rematch for December 12th.  After Diaz lost the first bout at UFC 244, as a result of doctor stoppage due to a cut, he pushed for a rematch.

The UFC had other plans for Masvidal, however, as ultimately he faced welterweight champ Kamaru Usman this past July and lost via decision. So, with that bout out of the way, and Conor McGregor apparently retired  – Masvidal has repeatedly said he wants to face the Irish star – the rematch is in the works.

Well, unless you’re brand new to MMA, you know that when Masvidal and Diaz fought last year, it was for the ‘BMF’ belt.

So, would the belt be up for grabs again? Following the latest Dana White Contender Series card on Tuesday, the UFC President said this (quote via MMA Junkie).

“(Masvidal) wants to defend it against Diaz,” White said. “They were the first two to fight for it. You know what I mean? They were the guys that fought for it. He wants to put it up versus Nate again.”

Makes sense

Although the ‘title’ was used as a marketing shtick the first time around to drive interest in the fight, and wasn’t supposed to become a regular thing, this news shouldn’t come as a surprise. It seemed like most fans welcomed the ‘BMF’ angle, so why not right?

The belt aside, it will be interesting to see if this fight gets finalized and if it does take place on December 12th. Recently it was reported the UFC is working on having Gilbert Burns challenge Usman that same night.

So, given that Masvidal – Diaz 2 will likely be pretty huge again, will the UFC put both those fights on the same card? Here’s hoping.
