Donald Cerrone

Donald Cerrone didn’t care for a question this past week whereby, he was asked about the possibility that he could hang up the gloves soon. But, when Dana White was asked about Cerrone’s current situation, the UFC President acknowledged that “Cowboy” is in uncharted waters.

White says “everything is on the line” for “Cowboy”

Due to the fact Cowboy is now closer to 40 than 30 – he’s 37 – of course, there has been some talk in recent months about the fact his career is winding down. But, now that Cerrone is riding a four fight losing streak, as he gets set to fight Niko Price tomorrow, questions about his future are spiking.

While talking with ESPN this past week, White was asked about Cerrone’s current situation, and he said this (quotes via MMA Junkie).

“I would say everything is on the line for ‘Cowboy,’” White said. “In professional sports, the day starts to come where all of our heroes start to get old, and ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone is getting there.

He needs a win. He needs a win badly.”

Those comments were in contrast to what Cerrone had to say, when he was asked about the possibility retirement could be around the corner.

“Hell no,” Cerrone said. “No. Not even in my train of thought. Wrong question. …

I’m planning on being here for a long time. I’m going to leave when I’m done. I don’t ever want the walking papers.

When ‘Cowboy’s’ done fighting, I’m going to bend my hat and I’m going to say, ‘All right boys, I’ve had enough. I’m out.’

I don’t ever want to have them call my manger and release me, that would totally suck. I’m going to keep fighting my ass off.”

What could come next?

Now, obviously if Cerrone goes out tomorrow at UFC Vegas 11 and scores an impressive win, talk about his fighting future will die down.

If he loses by decision, then speculation and debate about his retirement could very well increase. If he loses badly, however, you have to wonder if White might call on Cerrone to walk away.

Tomorrow will be Cerrone’s 53 pro MMA bout, and this stage of his career, he has absolutely nothing to prove.
