Matthew McConaughey Fauci Interview COVID-19

Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey interviewed Dr. Anthony Fauci about the coronavirus pandemic on Instagram for forty minutes on Thursday, and it didn’t take long for the exchange to get interesting. McConaughey set out to get answers about COVID-19 for the people, and the Academy Award winner let some of his own feelings slip along the way.

Matthew McConaughey Interviews Dr. Fauci

ABC News reported that McConaughey hit Fauci with a series of rapid-fire questions on everything from how worried people should be about catching COVID-19 from touching a doorknob (not too much) to whether Advil worsens symptoms (it does not.)

“OK, true-false: Sunlight kills the virus?” McConaughey asked.

“It does, that’s the truth,” Fauci replied, backing up a theory promoted by President Donald Trump.

Matthew McConaughey Asks Fauci About Herd Immunity

McConaughey later asked about the possibility of letting everyone get infected so that we can develop a herd immunity and let the virus die out.

Dr. Fauci, however, was not having any of this, saying that it would cause big problems in America, where underlying conditions like obesity and diabetes are prevalent.

“If everyone contracted it … a lot of people are going to die,” Fauci said. “The death toll would be enormous and totally unacceptable. And that’s the reason why we’re against saying, ‘Let it fly. Let everybody get infected and we’ll be fine.’ That’s a bad idea.”

Fauci went on to call for Americans to choose between partying all summer and opening schools in the fall.

“You want to open the bars or you want to open the schools?” he asked.

McConaughey even asked Fauci if he had millions of dollars invested in a vaccine, to which the 79 year-old doctor responded with a laugh, “Matthew, no. I got zero! I’m a government worker. I have a government salary.”

Matthew McConaughey Is Sick Of People Politicizing COVID-19

While maintaining his token laid-back style, McConaughey talked about how enraged he has become at the politicization of this pandemic.

“Like a lot of people, I’ve been more than disillusioned — actually quite full of rage — at how COVID has been politicized,” McConaughey said.

The “True Detective” star then added that people are “looking for identity and purpose in a big time of unknown. And man, so many people have become disillusioned with our leadership. But also so many people have fervently [clung] to the fringes of the right and left, which causes further divide a lack of unity.”

Fauci Interview Ends On A Happy Note

The interview ended on a high note, with Matthew McConaughey feeling inspired by Dr. Fauci saying that the nation can pull together again like we did after World War II and 9/11.

“This is equivalent to that, Matthew. We’ve got to pull together, absolutely,” Fauci said.

“That’s it. … We can have our freedom and our party later,” McConaughey replied. “Right now, let’s pull together.”

Regardless of what side of the aisle you are on, we should all be able to get behind the idea of America pulling together. Here’s hoping that we can do it!
