Kelvin Gastelum did not want to take anything away from Jack Hermansson’s performance this past weekend.
But the former title contender was far from pleased by his own work inside the Octagon.
Gastelum suffered a first round submission loss to Hermansson, and explained his post-fight thoughts on social media.
“Truly embarrassed guys. I’m sorry. My team, my family, UFC, Dana White, Mick Maynard,” Gastelum wrote on Instagram. “I’m much better than what was shown tonight. Thanks to all my family , my team and my friends for the ongoing support. I love you all.
“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so u can know who u are, what u can rise from, how u can still come out of it.”
Gastelum was caught by Hermansson in a heel-hook just over a minute into their middleweight co-main event.
For the 28-year-old former winner of The Ultimate Fighter, the defeat marked his third consecutive setback. Gastelum also lost a split decision to Darren Till last November and another decision to current champion Israel Adesanya.
