Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker lived up to the hype tied to their fight tonight, and then some, but it was ‘The Diamond’ who emerged victorious at UFC Vegas 4.

Round one

Both men fired kicks right out of the gate. Hooker threatened with a hard left early as well. Hooker followed up with some calf kicks and Poirier responded a nice left. Another calf kick from Hooker. More calf kicks from Poirier and the latter fired in a body kick. Poirier clinched up but Hooker worked his way out.

Poirier dug in with more kicks to the body of Hooker and then tagged the latter with a hard right. Hooker threatened with a knee and the lightweights traded shots in the pocket. Hooker stuck a nice jab but ate a right hand in return.

Round two

Hooker went to the body with a kick but Poirier fired in some hard rights. Hooker tagged Poirier with a right of his own and ‘The Diamond’ clinched up. Poirier scored with some elbows from inside and Hooker dug to the body with punches. Poirier shot in for a double but Hooker defended. Great action.

Poirier scored with a right and Hooker was cut by the right eye. Both men planted punches and Poirier clinched up again. Poirier was also cut in an enusing exchange. The lightweights continued to fire hard shots despite the fact both were visibly fatigued. Late in the round, Hooker planted several big punches and Poirier attempted a takedown.

In the final moments of the round, both lightweights chucked huge shots, but Poirier probably took the worst of it, Wow.

Round three

The cut on Hooker is on his right eyelid. Not a good spot. Hooker planted another calf kick but Poirier scored with hard right. Poirier scored with another hard left and then a right. Moments later, Poirier landed another left and Hooker appeared to be slowing.

Hooker went for a takedown mid round and Poirier countered with a guillotine choke. It looked tight for am moment or two, but Hooker worked his way out. Poirier fired in elbows from the bottom and Hooker didn’t try to pass. Poirier worked his way up and tagged Hooker with an elbow and a punch. Both men were bloodied and battered by the end of round three.

Round four

The action slowed somewhat to begin round four, but Hooker briefly took Poirier down off of leg kick attempt. Hooker went for another TD moments later and succeeded, but Poirier popped right back up and took the lightweight down.

Poirier moved into mount and started landing shots from above. In the ensuing scramble, Poirier rolled into an armbar and then started looking for an omoplata. Hooker escaped, however, and then slipped out of a guillotine choke attempt. During the final seconds of the round, Hooker landed shots from above. What a fight.

Round five

Poirier moved forward to begin round five, but both men, understandably, looked exhausted. Poirier scored with the jab and then he started talking to Hooker. The latter went for a takedown but Poirier defended and then scored with a left. Moments later, however, Hooker took Poirier down again.

Poirier quickly worked his way back to his feet, and then defended another TD from Hooker. Moments later, Poirier tagged Hooker as he shot in and he took top position in the final moments. Unbelievable fight.

Poirier received the unanimous decision win.
