Conor McGregor made headlines this past weekend by announcing he’s hanging up the gloves, and not surprisingly, his former foe Floyd Mayweather Jr. has fired a verbal shot at the star.
Not long after UFC 250 concluded on Saturday, McGregor tweeted out that he’s retiring. Then, in a follow-up interview, the former UFC champ said he’s exiting the sport since the “game” doesn’t excite him anymore. McGregor also made it clear that he’s very frustrated with the fact his plans for a busy 2020 campaign, have been stalled.
Well, Mayweather Jr. couldn’t pass on the opportunity to take a poke at his former opponent, who has claimed a rematch would go differently. The undefeated boxer had this message for McGregor.
“If I’m not mistaken, didn’t you tell Mike Tyson you could beat me if we fought a second time?” Mayweather said. “Now you’re quitting! I thought you wanted to beat the best? Well, if you decide to come back, I will be waiting to punish you again.”
Now, since Mayweather stopped McGregor in their 2017 boxing match, both men have called for a rematch at various times. Before McGregor returned to the UFC earlier this, he once again, argued that a rematch with the decorated boxer would have a different result.
But, if McGregor does return – since he also retired in 2016 and 2019 there are good reasons to think he might – it’s hard to imagine a rematch with Mayweather materializing.
The UFC will look to maximize the company’s own revenue opportunities via MMA fights for McGregor. In other words, at this stage, a rematch between Khabib Nurmagomedov and McGregor, or even Justin Gaethje versus McGregor, are likely bigger bouts than Mayweather – McGregor 2.
There has never seemed to be much buzz for a rematch between the stars, particularly in the boxing world.
