Reigning UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic wants to finish his trilogy with Daniel Cormier.
It is just that a global pandemic has come between the two.
Miocic, who won the title back after finishing Cormier at UFC 241 last August, took to Twitter to respond to comments made by UFC president Dana White recently.
“I want to fight DC. It’s going to happen period,” Miocic posted. “I’m going to give my fans what they want to see. My management has been working on dates with UFC.
“Right now I’m doing what the Governor DeWine is advising and am working as a first responder. I can’t control a global pandemic.”
In 2018, Miocic lost the belt to Cormier. He had scored three consecutive title defenses prior to the setback over Francis Ngannou, Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem.
White told Barstool Sports that a current champion could “possibly” be stripped of his title.
Cormier has said over and over again that he will retire following the bout and that he is fine with it taking place with no fans in attendance.
The UFC returns this Saturday night with UFC 249 from Jacksonville, Florida. Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje collide in the main event for the interim UFC lightweight title, while Henry Cejudo defends his bantamweight belt against Dominick Cruz in the co-main event.
