Dana White Holds Call With Fighters, Offers Reassurance

UFC president Dana White recently gathered many of his fighters for a conference call.

The main basis behind the call was to reassure the fighters that everything will be properly taken care of moving forward. That includes the use of testing to hold events, including at “Fight Island.”

White reiterated that the May 9 date is nearly locked in to hold the first event in weeks. The UFC is planning for an epic return with three title fights.

That includes an interim lightweight bout between Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje, along with Henry Cejudo and Amanda Nunes making title defenses.

As for “Fight Island,” White told the athletes that is being looked at to start in late May or early June. He also noted that International Fight Week, typically early in July in Las Vegas, is likely to be canceled.

According to a report by MMAjunkie, some of the other key talking points included:

* Fighters who lost bouts during the cancellation will be the focal point to getting inside the Octagon first.

* A strong dislike for catchweight bouts, instead wanting the fighters to make weight.

* Matchmakers will assist in medical exams, tickets to reach “Fight Island” for corners.

* “Fight Island” will take place on international waters, allowing people to compete without visas.

* Plans to use both the UFC Apex and UFC Performance Institute for upcoming fights.

* Working with the Nevada Athletic Commission to promote in Las Vegas in May, much like the WWE being allowed to work in Florida after being declared an “essential business.”

The UFC held a card in Brazil in March before being forced to the sidelines after pressure from Disney and ESPN.

White was very adamant in his plans to be the first professional sports event back as soon as possible. COVID-19, also known as the novel coronavirus, has halted sports, businesses and life around the globe.
