Although the UFC recently announced that UFC 249 and “subsequent bouts” were being postponed, according to Dana White, the promotion could be holding fights in the not too distant future.

How so? Apparently the “fight island” will be ready to go soon.

White talks timeline for “fight island” cards

Not long ago, White reported that the UFC had secured two locations to hold events. One turned out to be the Tachi Palace Resort and Casino in California, and the other is apparently a private island. Which island, however, hasn’t been disclosed.

Well, the plan to hold the April 18th, UFC 249 at the Tachia Palace Resort and Casino fell through, as ESPN asked the promotion to postpone the event (due to concerns over the coronavirus). But, according to White, things are still in motion to hold bouts on an island.

While talking to ESPN recently about those plans, White said the following (quotes via MMA Fighting).

“That’s why I’m telling all my guys not to worry. Cause Fight Island’s going to happen,” White said. “All the infrastructure’s being built right now and getting put in place.

As we get closer to that, then I’ll start figuring out booking fights, getting guys ready plus I can ship guys over there earlier and they can start training over there on the island.

“So once that’s all in place, you’re looking at a month. A month, I’ll have all that put together and guys can start training and can go there.

I’m sure people are going to be ready to get out of their houses in another month and go to an island somewhere and train.”

“…It’s all coming together,” White said. “It’s all going to happen. I could go next week but this is what it is and I’ll see you in a month.”

So, this is pretty interesting to hear, and the fact we’re talking about a “fight island” is surreal. But, questions remain.

White has repeatedly insisted that the UFC will take extensive steps to ensure the health and safety of everyone involved in the events. But, specific details on this, in regards to the island, haven’t been announced.

In addition, if the pandemic is still going, you have to wonder if the ESPN will be board? As you would think there will still be outcry from officials regarding concerns over testing, medical attention for fighters, quarantining etc.

White says Endeavor co-CEO came up with the idea

And when asked who originally thought of the UFC holding fight on an island, White reported this.

“We have to run both, international and local fights. So we got the local fights figured out. How do we run international? So Ari [Emanuel] and I came up with the island.”

We shall see what happens. If you’re keeping track, it’s been close to one month now since the UFC’s last card took place. The last event, UFC Brasilia, went down on March 14th.
