Recently it was reported that the UFC was looking at having Colby Covington fight Tyron Woodley this Saturday, when the promotion was attempting to save its upcoming events. Woodley, however, claimed his rival wasn’t down, but “Chaos” says otherwise.
Covington says he’s “heartbroken” short notice bout didn’t come through
As temporary bans were enacted by various jurisdictions on public gatherings and traveling, UFC President Dana White relayed that the promotion would find a way, somehow, to hold its upcoming events, including this Saturday’s.
Woodley was originally scheduled to fight Leon Edwards at UFC London, but due to the bans, it became clear the card wouldn’t happen. Covington took to social media to offer to fight Woodley, and it was reported the UFC was considering the match-up. Woodley, however, claimed that Covington had gone radio silent.
Well, since the UFC announced it’s next three cards have been postponed, Covington spoke with MMA Fighting. The polarizing fighter had this to say about the last-minute scramble to book a fight with Woodley.
”Both sides were agreeing,” Covington said. “Tyron Woodley’s never accepted a fight with me. For the first time ever, he’s finally agreed to fight me, and it was about to happen for the people, and all of a sudden, the plug got pulled, and they couldn’t find anywhere to do the fight.”
”…I was excited to shock the world,” he said. “I’ve been keeping my business on the low, but I was ready to pounce. It sucks that that opportunity is getting taken away from me. I’m heartbroken.”
There you have it. Was Covington really on board with fighting Woodley on just a few days notice? It’s possible. Sure. But, you have to really wonder if his team would have advised against doing so. After all, Covington is coming off a stoppage loss to Kamaru Usman in December, and facing Woodley with no, real camp, would have been a tall order.
Speaking of Usman, Covington also said in the interview that when UFC operations return to normal, he’s still hoping to secure a rematch with Usman. But, when you consider the UFC was planning to have Usman fight Jorge Masvidal next, chances are Covington will need to fight someone else in the interim.
Covington comments on the coronavirus pandemic
And while talking about the coronavirus pandemic, which has now infected over 100,000 people worldwide, Covington said this:
”This is the greatest country in the world,” he said. “So I want to see us come together as one and understand this isn’t left our right. This isn’t political. This is the world and the nation needing to come together. We need to put our differences aside, and people need to look out for each other. Let’s get America back to normal as soon as possible.”
We can all agree to that no?
