Kamaru Usman Teases Possibility he Could Fight Conor McGregor Next

Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal have been trading verbal shots for a little while now, and recently UFC President Dana White said the promotion’s planning to have the two fight this summer. But, not only has Usman reported that fight’s not signed, recently he teased the possibility of facing Conor McGregor next.

Usman teases McGregor fight

Since McGregor ran through Donald Cerrone at UFC 246, much of the talk about Jorge Masvidal fighting the Irish star has shifted. White has said having McGregor fight the winner of the April 18th bout between lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson makes the most sense. Further, White recently said that Usman and Masvidal are going to fight, likely during International Fight Week in July.

But, while talking to the media at UFC 247 this past weekend, Usman had this to say about his next bout (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“Hey, if that’s one thing you guys know about the UFC, nothing’s a done deal unless it’s a done deal,” Usman said, before confirming the Masvidal fight isn’t finalize, “No, we haven’t signed anything yet.”

When the welterweight champ was asked about what could change the plan for him to fight Masvidal, he stated:

“Everybody likes ‘Red Panty Night,’ right? I like ‘Red Panty Night’ myself,” he said. “It is what it is. Once those contracts are signed, everything is signed, sealed and delivered.”

“Like I said, everybody likes ‘Red Panty Night,’” Usman said. “So, I don’t know. We’ll go back and we’ll take a look at that.”

“Absolutely!” he grinned. “What? That might be the nice ‘Red Panty Night’ with the laces and everything. Anything could happen; let’s just say that. Anything could happen.”

Now, if you’re brand new to MMA, you might not know that the “red panty night” comment is in reference to a zinger McGregor made several years back.

But could this happen?

As it stands right now, there are more reasons to say Usman – McGregor won’t happen next. After all, White has been talking about having McGregor fight for the 155 crown again, and the latter pushed for a rematch with Khabib for months. So, it would be kind of surprising if the UFC changed gears on all that now. Especially since Conor would be the underdog for that fight, and the UFC likely doesn’t want to put a possible rematch with Khabib at risk.

But, you never know. If McGregor is adamant he wants to go for a third, division title, maybe the UFC will come on board.
