Prince Harry Meghan Markle

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got some bad news this week when Canada’s public safety minister announced that Canada will stop paying for the couple’s security next month when the couple steps away from their Royal duties. This creates big question marks as to who will pay for the jet-setting duo’s estimated $26 million annual security bill.

Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Losing Canadian Taxpayer-Funded Security

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the Queen that Harry and Meghan would be kept safe in this country when they announced they were leaving the royal family back in January, according to Daily Mail.

However, the Office of the Minister of Public Safety said in a statement last night that Canada had only stepped up to pay their security bill because the couple were designated as “internationally protected”.

Newsflash: once Harry and Meghan complete their official duties on March 31, they will no longer be senior royals. And that means they will lose their formal protection designation – and their Mountie guard along with it – in March.

The Duke and Duchess along with their son Archie have enjoyed the protection by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. This is the first time that Canadian officials confirmed the family’s protection would end due to the couple’s impending ‘change in status’.

The full statement from the ministry read:

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex choosing to relocate to Canada on a part-time basis presented our government with a unique and unprecedented set of circumstances. The RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) has been engaged with officials in the UK from the very beginning regarding security considerations. As the Duke and Duchess are currently recognized as Internationally Protected Persons, Canada has an obligation to provide security assistance on an as-needed basis.

At the request of the Metropolitan Police, the RCMP has been providing assistance to the Met since the arrival of the Duke and Duchess to Canada intermittently since November 2019. The assistance will cease in the coming weeks, in keeping with their change in status.”

Who Will Pay Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s $26 Million Security Bill Now?

The couple contends they are entitled to ongoing protection due to Harry being a blood member of the British Royal family.

At the time of writing, a statement posted to the couple’s Royal Sussex website still reads:

“It is agreed that The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will continue to require effective security to protect them and their son. This is based on The Duke’s public profile by virtue of being born into The Royal Family, his military service, the Duchess’ own independent profile, and the shared threat and risk level documented specifically over the last few years.”

It remains to be seen whether Harry and Meghan will have foot their own security bill, or if the British taxpayers will be forced to pay it. The couple’s security situation is currently under review by a joint committee of British security and palace officials.

Buckingham Palace refused to comment on the situation, as did Scotland Yard, who would only say “we don’t discuss matters of security.”

The ministry’s announcement comes after tensions rose in Canada regarding the astronomical estimates of the couple’s security costs.

BACKSTORY: Harry And Meghan’s $26m Taxpayer Pricetag For Jet-Setting Lifestyle Slammed As ‘Unworkable’

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation recently handed over a petition with 80,000 signatures to the Canadian government demanding that taxpayers should not have to foot the bill for Harry and Meghan’s security.

We Applaud Canada For Taking A Stand

We applaud Canada for standing up for themselves and refusing to cater to this spoiled couple.

There is absolutely no reason why the people of Canada should have to use their own hard-earned tax dollars to fund the jet-setting lifestyle of the ex-Royal British couple just because the two of them decided to relocate to their country for a while.

The British taxpayers should not be on the hook to pay for Harry and Meghan’s security either. They wanted to leave the royal family and live a ‘normal’ life. Well, that means they should have to pay their own bills just like everyone else.

Including their $26 million security tab if the ‘environmentally conscious’ couple wants to jet around.

Perhaps life as a commoner isn’t as fun as you thought, eh Harry?
