WWE Didn’t Want To Sign Cain Velasquez, Martha Hart In Documentary

WWE Didn’t Want To Sign Cain Velasquez

When it became apparent that Cain Velasquez was leaving MMA for pro wrestling, there were several promotions paying close attention. Apparently, Velasquez called WWE first, but they passed. That led to the former UFC Heavyweight Champion working for AAA, where he looked fantastic.

“So when I did AAA, I called the WWE first,” said Velasquez to Cultaholic. “I called them, me, my people, my agent called the WWE. You know, this is obviously where the best guys are, this is the top. So Triple H and Vince McMahon weren’t going to give me a shot right away, that was clear.”

Instead, Velasquez worked a few AAA matches under a mask and moved around like a cruiserweight.

“Lucha was my first love of wrestling,” said Velasquez. “I watched that as — that was my first time watching any kind of pro wrestling. So I said, ‘Why don’t we do a lucha match?’ Me and my wife, my manager — my wife was super into it. She was like, ‘Why don’t you do a lucha match?’ I said, ‘Okay, let’s do it’…I wanted to wear the mask and do traditional lucha moves just to pay homage to the people who have done it in the past and they just look f—ing cool to do.”

Velasquez’s WWE Debut

WWE saw the matches and signed Velasquez to a multi year deal. He debuted on SmackDown’s first episode on FOX, aiming for WWE Champion Brock Lesnar. Those two have a past, dating back to when Velasquez defeated Lesnar for the UFC title.

The two met at Crown Jewel, with Lesnar winning via submtission in a matter of minutes. Because Velasquez walked into the match with a bad knee and WWE did not want to take any risk, hence the quick finish.

While Velasquez has not returned to WWE TV, he will be an entrant in the Royal Rumble Match. Some betting sites have him towards the top tier of possible winners. Also, he could eliminate Lesnar to build towards a trilogy bout at WrestleMania 36.

Martha Hart In Documentary

Of all the horrific deaths in pro wrestling, Owens Hart is one that fans will never forget. At Over the Edge in May 1999, Hart fell 78 feet, landing chest-first on the top rope. He died shortly after the accident.

Since then, his widow, Martha Hart, has held a grudge against WWE. It caused WWE to not use Owen’s likeness in their products and he also is yet to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

In season two of their Viceland series, Dark Side Of The Ring is covering the death of Owen. They were able to secure a rare interview with Martha, which will be part of the documentary.

The Owen Hart Foundation uploaded pictures of Martha being interviewed.

At the moment, there is no release date for the documentary.
