If you’ve followed the lead-up to UFC 246 and tonight’s bout between Conor McGregor and Donald Cerrone, you know that plenty of pundits, fighters and industry figures have been asked to weigh-in on the contest. That’s what happens when one of the biggest stars in combat sports, in McGregor, is booked to fight one of the most popular fighters on the UFC roster.
So how does the legendary Chuck Liddell see tonight’s fight playing out?
There’s been extensive speculation about how McGregor will look tonight, as it will mark the first time he’s fought since October, 2018, when he was submitted by Khabib Nurmagomedov. Recently TMZ Sports caught up with Liddell, and when asked to comment on tonight’s bout, the UFC Hall of Famer said this (quotes via MMA Mania):
“I think if ‘Cowboy’ can come out and convince him he’s going to take him down, get after him, and get him guessing whether or not they’re going to go up or down, I think ‘Cowboy’ can do it,” Liddell said.
“If he lets Conor get comfortable out there and firing at will he might run into trouble.”
“He’s always going to be tough. He’s always going to be a tough striker,” Liddel said of McGregor. “But people have that question whether or not he’s been struggling with some issues lately. Is he really back? As strong as he was?
“I’m a big fan of ‘Cowboy.’ I’m hoping he comes out with the win.”
Liddell isn’t the only person to say that Cerrone should mix in some level changes and takedown attempts, as a means to counter McGregor’s punishing strikes. But, Cerrone has repeatedly said he intends to stand and strike with the “Notorious” fighter.
Might that change, however, if McGregor stings him? Or is there any chance Cerrone has just been saying that? We shall see soon enough.
Here is the complete line-up for UFC 246, which will be hosted by T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on January 18th.
