After Chan Sung Jung took out Frankie Edgar last month, “The Korean Zombie” called for a fight with new featherweight champ, Alexander Volkanovksi. While it’s not clear if that’s going to happen, what is clear is that Jung’s feeling confident about his abilities to defeat the new 145 king.

Jung praises coach for recent wins

The South Korean star faced Edgar at UFC Busan on December 21st, and not long into the fight, Jung rocked Edgar with some heavy shots. The legendary fighter hung in there for a couple of minutes, but eventually, Jung finished the deal in the opening round.

That win followed Jung’s bout with Renato “Moicano” last June, which saw “The Korean Zombie” put away the Brazilian in just 58 seconds. As a result of those performances, the 32-year-old Jung recently told MMA Junkie the following:

“As I have mentioned in almost all the interviews, I’m still in awe of the way the coaches at Fight Ready in Arizona – Eddie (Cha), Eric (Albarracin), and Santino (DeFranco) – have prepared for my fight, such as the game plan, their skills, etc.”

“I (haven’t been) able to use all the wrestling and jiu-jitsu skills I was taught by Eric and Santino, respectively,” Jung said. “But even if my fight went on for the whole 25 minutes, the results would not have changed. I was especially stunned at Eddie’s game plan.

“I faced Frankie for less than a minute. Frankie moved and responded in the exact same manner Eddie had predicted…

“For each and every fight, I’m improving,” Jung said. “And if I were to prepare to fight against Volkanovski, I will again improve. The two fights that I actually had a game plan, Renato Moicano and Frankie Edgar, were finished in the first round. That fact isn’t going to change just because I’m facing a champion. To add on, I’ve had more experience as the main event than he did.”

There’s no question that Jung’s striking has been on another level in his recent fights. Even in his late, KO loss to Yair Rodriguez, who is a ridiculously dangerous striker, Jung won a lot of the exchanges on the feet and many believe he was headed to a victory.

Before Jung fought Rodriguez, he took out Dennis Bermudez in less than three minutes in 2017. So, Jung’s hands, coupled with his submission game, makes him a huge threat at 145.

What could come next?

So, will Jung get his wish and fight Volkanovski next? It seems kind of unlikely. Due to Max Holloway’s remarkable run at 145, and because he defended that belt three times, chances are he’ll get an immediate rematch with the new champ.

Volkanovski ended Holloway’s reign in December by scoring a decision win at UFC 245.
