Kanye West joins Joel Osteen to bring his Sunday Service to Lakewood Church

Kanye West headed to the megachurch of Houston-based televangelist and author, Pastor Joel Osteen, on Sunday to perform his “Sunday Service” experience, a faith-filled concert that features a choir.

Kanye West’s “Sunday Service” With Joel Osteen

Fox News reported that the event at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church opened with the choir performing and Osteen recounting his life as a minister. Then, rap superstar Kanye himself came out onstage.

“He saved a wretch like me,” Kanye sang off-key with the choir, performing his song “Selah,” from his new faith-based album “Jesus Is King”.

The Grammy award winning artist then proceeded to start rapping, reading lyrics from a smartphone in his hand. Kanye West appearing at the side of Joel Osteen may seem strange, but the collaboration comes after Kanye opened up in recent weeks about his devotion to God.

Earlier in the day on Sunday, the “Gold Digger” performer revealed that his spiritual awakening has made him realize he’s no longer in the service of fame and money but “in service to God.”

“I know that God has been calling me for a long time and the devil has been distracting me for a long time,” West said, according to Time.

The rapper added that at his lowest point, which was when he was hospitalized in 2016 after a “mental breakdown,” God “was there with me, sending me visions and inspiring me.”

Tickets for Kanye West’s Sunday Service with Joel Osteen – a free event – sold out on Ticketmaster minutes after they went up on Saturday. There are also reports that some people were then selling their tickets for hundreds of dollars.

The service was open to members of all faiths, and it took place at the iconic Lakewood Church, in which 43,000 people attend services each week.

Joel Osteen Opens Up About Father’s Death

During the service, Osteen talked about the sudden death of his father, the church’s founding pastor, in 1999. The pastor explained that his darkest days launched his brightest time in life.

“You got to keep moving forward,” Osteen said. “You are anointed at being you. … Walk in your own shoes.”

Adam Tyson, senior pastor of Placerita Bible Church, 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles, also took the stage to lead a prayer at one point. Over the past few months, Tyson has been leading West in Bible study.

Since January, West has been traveling all over the country holding his “Sunday Service” concerts. He’s performed the services at places like the Coachella music festival, an outdoor shopping center in Salt Lake City and at an Atlanta-area megachurch.

If you had asked me a year ago if I ever thought I’d live to see Kanye West and Joel Osteen share a stage, the answer would have been no.

It’s incredibly rare to see someone in the entertainment industry use their platform to spread the word of God. So what how Kanye is using his celebrity is very refreshing.

Millions of young people look up to him, so we’re glad that he’s encouraging them to find God and Christianity.

We need more celebrities in the world like Kanye West!
