Firas Zahabi Says Georges St-Pierre is Still a “Monster”, Believes “Megafight” Could Lead to Return

Georges St-Pierre will turn 39 next May, and is no longer enrolled in USADA’s testing program. But, recently his longtime coach Firas Zahabi reported the legend is still training all the time. In addition, the Tristar leader outlined what he thinks it would take to bring St-Pierre back to the Octagon.

Zahabi says GSP is still a “monster”

Recently Zahabi appeared on Joe Rogan’s podcast, and during the lengthy talk, Rogan asked the coach whether St-Pierre still trains. Zahabi reported the following (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“All the time,” Zahabi said. “He’s a machine. Dude, I’m telling you, if Usman or Colby gets injured . . . I don’t want to talk for Georges but man, he can kill anybody. He can kill anybody this man. He’s the world’s greatest martial artist. He’s a monster. I was just training with him Saturday.

“He loves to train. Saturday he trained, he finished all his rounds, and then he coached some blue belts and purple belts, just kind of hanging out with them, talking technique. The guy loves this stuff.”

If you’ve followed St-Pierre over the years, then this news likely doesn’t come as a surprise. The legend continued to train after announcing his hiatus from fighting in 2013, and GSP has talked about his need to train and to live a martial artist’s life.

Could GSP fight again?

Talk about St-Pierre returning for at least one more fight has never ended, ever since he vacated the UFC’s middleweight title in 2017, and even though he retired earlier this year. Case in point, in October, Dana White talked about the possibility of a bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and GSP.

Well, while talking about what it would take to get GSP back in the Octagon, Zahabi said this:

“It has to be, in my opinion – I don’t want to talk for him, but I think the thing that’s going to motivate him is a megafight,” Zahabi said. “He doesn’t want to be champion again and fight every three-four months. That’s done. It’s not gonna happen no more. But one megafight. Invite him back for a megafight and see if you could entice him because he’s a competitor. He’s still training, he’s still ripped, shredded, fighting. He can do five rounds. Maybe he can’t do five rounds right away but he [only] needs a few weeks and then he’s doing five rounds. He’s close to being there. He can get in fight shape. He’s just a monster.”

Then, Zahabi proceeded to say that he believes a fight with Khabib, at 165 pounds, would bring GSP out of retirement.

So, could we see the Canadian star back in the cage? For one more bout? It seems possible. If Nurmagomedov gets by Tony Ferguson in early 2020, don’t be surprised if he repeats his call for a fight with GSP. If the UFC’s willing to proceed with a super fight at 165, then you just never know right?
